August 23, 2009 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
TROY, NY --- Sandy Leon had an RBI double and solo home run, while Matt Swynenberg and Evan Bronson combined on a three-hit shutout as the Vermont Lake Monsters beat the Tri-City ValleyCats 3-0 in the first game of a scheduled New York-Penn League doubleheader Sunday evening at Bruno Stadium.
The second game of the twinbill was suspended by rain with Vermont leading 3-0 in the top of the third inning. The game will be completed on Wednesday, September 2nd at historic Centennial Field when Tri-City is scheduled to open a two-game series at Vermont. The suspended game will resume at 6:05 pm and be followed by that night's regularly-scheduled game.
The Lake Monsters were without a hit in the opener on Sunday until Leon laced a two-out RBI double to centerfield in the fifth inning to score Justin Bloxom, who had led off the inning with a walk. Vermont added another run in the sixth on a Destin Hood RBI double and Leon smacked his first home run of the season in the seventh inning for a 3-0 advantage.
Swynenberg (1-2) allowed just one hit with three walks and two strikeouts over five innings for his first win with the Lake Monsters. An error, walk and infield single gave the ValleyCats the bases loaded with one out in the second inning, but Swynenberg worked out of the jam by getting Sean Barksdale to ground into an inning-ending double play. Bronson earned his fourth save as he allowed two hits with one walk (just his second of the season) and one strikeout as Vermont recorded its seventh shutout win of the season.
In the suspended second game, Vermont got a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first on a Sean Nicol RBI single and Bloxom sacrifice fly. Francisco Soriano opened the third with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Nicol followed with a walk before the game was stopped and later suspended. When it resumes on September 2nd, Nicol will be on first base with one out in the 3rd with the Lake Monsters leading 3-0.
Vermont (28-33) opens a three-game series at Brooklyn on Monday night with Jack McGeary scheduled to start for the Lake Monsters, who return home to Centennial Field on Thursday night to begin their last homestand of the season.
