Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Fort Wayne TinCaps shortstop Leo De Vries has been named the Midwest League Player of the Month for April, Minor League Baseball announced Monday.

Across 19 games, the No. 1 San Diego Padres prospect led the Midwest League in slugging percentage (.625) and on-base plus slugging (1.003), while being tied for the league lead in triples (3). The switch-hitter also ranked third in extra-base hits (12), total bases (45), and average (.306), while being tied for fifth in RBIs (19) and tied for seventh in home runs (4).

De Vries is the just the fifth TinCap player to win Player of the Month since the Midwest League began issuing the award in 2013. He is the first since June of 2019, when current Cleveland Guardians left-handed pitcher Joey Cantillo earned the honor. The last TinCaps position player to garner the accolade was infielder Hudson Potts in August of 2017.

MLB.com's 16th ranked prospect overall ended the month on an eight-game on-base streak, going 14-for-29 (.483/543/.1.069) with four doubles, two triples, and three home runs with 14 RBIs.

De Vries' signature moment of the month came on the road at Lansing. On April 22, "El Mutante" went 5-for-5 with a single, a double, a triple, a sacrifice fly, and two home runs, completing just the third cycle in franchise history. In a 15-14 win, De Vries delivered a go-ahead, two-run triple in the top of the ninth inning.

"It was really cool," De Vries said afterward of his performance. "The biggest thing is I'm glad it helped the team win."

The top-ranked international prospect in 2024 according to Baseball America joined Rene Lopez (1993) and Gabriel Arias (2018) as the only Fort Wayne players to hit for the cycle. The eight-RBI performance also tied the single-game franchise record. A week later, on April 29, De Vries was just a triple shy of his second cycle, going 3-for-3 with three driven in versus Dayton.

At 18 years old, the Azua, Dominican Republic native is the youngest player at the High-A level.

Following a strong start to the month of May, De Vries is now hitting .309/.400/.593 with 12 extra-base hits and 19 RBIs in 22 games this season. His on-base streak has risen to 11 games (since April 20), after going 8-for-15 in Fort Wayne's series against the Dragons.

The 'Caps are winners of six of their last seven and are two games back of the Midwest League East Division lead.

Following a six-game road trip to South Bend this week, Fort Wayne returns home for a 12-game homestand starting May 13. The promotional schedule includes the first Postgame Fireworks Night of the season at Parkview Field on Friday, May 16, as the TinCaps take on the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers affiliate). Tickets start at $7 and can be purchased through TinCaps.com/Tickets, by calling 260-482-6400, and at the Parkview Field Ticket Office.
