MWL Player of the Week: Leo de Vries, Again

May 5, 2025 - Midwest League (MWL)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Fort Wayne TinCaps shortstop Leo De Vries has been named the Midwest League Player of the Week for a second consecutive week, Minor League Baseball announced Monday. The honor also comes on the heels of winning the Midwest League Player of the Month award for April.

Across five games against the Dayton Dragons (Reds affiliate), De Vries went 8-for-15 with two doubles, a home run, and six RBIs while not striking out at all.

The No. 1 Padres prospect led the Midwest League in average (.533), on-base percentage (.667), slugging (.867) and OPS (1.534). He also ranked fifth in RBIs and tied for fifth in walks (6).

De Vries started off the week in near historic fashion on Tuesday. A week removed from capturing the third cycle in franchise history, the switch-hitter was a triple shy of the cycle going 3-for-3 with a two-run home run. The shortstop backed that performance up with a game-clinching, over-the-shoulder catch to end Thursday's game. MLB and others featured the catch on their social media platforms.

Following a strong start to the month of May, the 18-year-old is now hitting .309/.400/.593 with 12 extra-base hits and 19 RBIs in 22 games this season. His on-base streak has risen to 11 games (since April 20), in which he's batting .447/.542/.895.

De Vries is the first TinCap to ever win the award in back-to-back weeks and just the fourth TinCaps player to receive the honor twice in the same season. He joins Fernando Tatis Jr. (2017), Rymer Liriano (2011), and Jason Hagerty (2010). The last player in the Midwest League to achieve the accolade consecutively was current Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Jonny DeLuca with the Great Lakes Loons in 2022.

Earlier today, Minor League Baseball announced De Vries as the Midwest League Player of the Month for April. De Vries is the just the fifth TinCap player to win Player of the Month since the Midwest League began issuing the award in 2013. He is the first since June of 2019, when current Cleveland Guardians left-handed pitcher Joey Cantilloearned the honor. The last TinCaps position player to garner the accolade was infielder Hudson Potts in August of 2017.

The 'Caps are winners of six of their last seven and are two games back of the Midwest League East Division lead. Following a six-game road trip to South Bend this week, Fort Wayne returns home for a 12-game homestand starting May 13. The promotional schedule includes the first Postgame Fireworks Night of the season at Parkview Field on Friday, May 16, as the TinCaps take on the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers affiliate). Tickets start at $7 and can be purchased through TinCaps.com/Tickets, by calling 260-482-6400, and at the Parkview Field Ticket Office.
