Laredo Lemurs News Release
Laredo, TX "" The Laredo Lemurs (3-5) could not pick up the big hit with runners in scoring position as the St. Paul Saints (7-1) took the first game of the three-game series 8-4 at Uni-Trade Stadium on Friday night.
The Lemurs managed to get runners on base throughout the night against the slugging Saints, but the big hit eluded them as they left 12 runners on base, with six of them left in scoring position, and three left stranded at third.
The Lemurs scoring offense was provided in the third inning with catcher Luke Bailey clubbed a two-run homer to left field to bring in A.J. Kirby-Jones. It was the third home run of the early season for the Lemurs backstop.
The Lemurs grabbed another run in the fourth frame when Abel Nieves picked up one of his three hits. He led the fourth off with a double and was later driven home from third on a Denis Phipps ground out to short.
The Saints offense would be scattered throughout the game as they picked up two in the first, three in the second, one in the fifth, and two runs in the ninth. The Saints were led their number nine hitter tonight as Anthony Phillips went three for four with three singles, two RBI's and a run scored. Also pitching in with three hits was Mike Kvasnicka, who picked up a double and two singles with two runs batted in. Ian Gac, the league's leading hitter, went two for four with two runs scored and two RBI's.
Lemurs starter Chad Povich (0-2), making his second start of the season, took the loss tonight, as he went 4.1 innings, giving up six runs on six hits with three walks and three punch outs.
The winning pitcher was Saints' starter Jeff Shields (2-0), as he went six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits while walking three and sticking out one.
The Lemurs will face the Saints Saturday and Sunday night to finish up the three game series. The Lemurs will then welcome in the Lincoln Saltdogs, last year's American Association runner-up, for a three game series starting on Monday.
