Birmingham Legion FC News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL - The US Open Cup is back, and Birmingham Legion FC will enter the competition in the second round against Southern States SC. The match will be played in Tuscaloosa at the University of Alabama Soccer Stadium on Thursday, April 7 and presented by Alabama Power.
All University of Alabama students and Legion FC season ticket holders will be granted free admission, with the first 250 students at the game to receive complimentary Chick-fil-A sandwich gift cards. Single game ticket information will be announced in the coming days at bhmlegion.com or on the Legion FC app.
Now in its 107th edition, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has crowned a champion every year since 1914, apart from 2020 and 2021. The tournament is conducted on a single-game-knockout basis and open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer.
Legion FC's second round opponent, Southern States SC, a semi-professional team from Hattiesburg, MS that currently competes in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), knocked off the Georgia Revolution in the first round of the USOC earlier this week. Major League Soccer teams will enter the tournament in the third round as potential opponents, if #ThreeSparks advances.
This year's Open Cup winner will receive $300,000 in prize money, a berth in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League and have its name engraved on the Dewar Challenge Trophy - one of the oldest nationally-contested trophies in American team sports.
In the meantime, Legion FC's next home game is tomorrow night, Saturday, March 26, at 6:30pm at Protective Stadium versus the Colorado Springs Switchbacks.
