Fort Wayne, IN (December 12, 2010) - Following a tough defeat on Saturday, The Texas Legends got back on track Sunday evening with a 118-109 win over the Fort Wayne Mad Ants at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
The Legends came into the game shorthanded, as starters Joe Alexander and Mavericks' assignee Dominique Jones sat out with injuries. However, in the final meeting of the season between these two team, Texas was led by two players who had not been heard from much through the first seven game of the season.
The first draft pick in Legends franchise history, Matt Rogers, recorded career-high's in points (23) and rebounds (10). Meanwhile, Reece Hampton had played in just three games and scored six points over 13 minutes all season coming into Sunday's game. On this night, Hampton would be steal the spotlight pacing the Legends with 24 points to go along with his 13 rebounds.
The Mad Ants started off the game hot and led by as much as 13 in the opening quarter, but down by six with six minutes to go in the first half the Legends would come rolling back. Texas outscored Fort Wayne 20-4 to finish the half and led 52-42 going into the break.
A 15-2 run midway through the third quarter by the Mad Ants put the home team up by a point. However, Texas had one final push, with a 15-2 run of their own toward the end of the third period to take a commanding lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
The Legends improved to 6-2 with the win and won their first game in franchise history against a team from the East Conference. The Mad Ants dropped to 5-3 after the loss.
Texas will now come back home for a rematch against the Tulsa 66ers on Tuesday night, with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at HP Court inside Dr Pepper Arena. The Legends defeated the minor league affiliate of the Oklahoma City Thunder 110-99 in their last home game.
In the season of giving, the Legends will be hosting WFAA Santa's Helpers toy drive prior to the game against on Tuesday. Fans are encouraged to bring new unwrapped gifts to the arena that will be distributed through 22 community agencies to North Texas families and more than 50,000 children in need. Also, there will be a Salvation Army bell ringer present to collect donations and an injured local high school football star will be honored.
