Iowa Wolves News Release
DES MOINES, IA, December 12, 2010- Guard Josh Bostic scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the New Mexico Thunderbirds defeated the Iowa Energy 111-106 Sunday in Des Moines. Bostic, a 6'5" guard, who entered the game averaging 7.3 points and 2.3 rebounds, had a career day to help improve the Thunderbirds to 5-4 on the year.
Iowa raced out to a 60-51 halftime lead as guard Kyle Weaver scored 13 points. The Energy extended the lead to 70-59 on a pair of Othyus Jeffers free throws with 6:50 left in the 3rd quarter. New Mexico responded with a 14-0 run, fueled by a combined 12 points from Bostic and guard Dar Tucker, to take a 73-70 lead.
The two teams exchanged the lead multiple times throughout the rest of the game. Energy guard Curtis Stinson made a leaning shot to tie the score at 104-104 with 1:15 remaining in the game. After the teams traded misses, New Mexico had the ball with 36 seconds left in the game. Forward Anthony Richardson's jump shot was off, but Bostic corralled the rebound and was fouled by Energy center Courtney Sims. Bostic made both free throws to put the Thunderbirds up 106-104.
After a pair of misses from Jeffers, a jump ball was called between Stinson and Bostic. On the jump, the referees determined that Stinson knocked the ball out of bounds, giving New Mexico possession of the ball. As the Thunderbirds threw the ball in, Iowa's Michael Haynes was called for an intentional foul before the ball was inbounded. That call, coupled with a technical on Energy coach Nick Nurse, gave Alan Anderson four free throws. Anderson knocked down all four, putting the game away for the visitors.
Stinson led Iowa with 20 points and 11 assists while Jeffers added a team-high 22 points.
Anderson finished with 25 points while Tucker had 14 points and 10 rebounds for New Mexico.
Iowa hosts Erie on Friday night in Des Moines. Tickets are available at www.dahlstickets.com, by calling 564-8550 or at the arena box office.
