Kyle Greenwalt (1-1) threw six shutout innings to get the win as the Lexington Legends took the opener of a doubleheader with the West Virginia Power at Applebee's Park, 3-0. The Power won the second game, 6-3.
In the opener, Lexington pitchers extended their scoreless string to 24 with the shutout. Daniel Meszaros pitched the seventh and retired West Virginia in order, striking out two and earning his fourth save in as many opportunities.
The Legends scored first in the third inning. Albert Cartwright singled, went to second on a wild pickoff throw and took third on a single by Ricardo Bonfante. With Jay Austin batting, West Virginia pitcher Duke Welker (0-2) threw a wild pitch, which allowed Cartwright to score and Bonfante to go from first to third. Bonfante scored as Austin grounded out to make it 2-0.
Lexington added one more run in the fifth. With two out, Cartwright doubled and went to third when left fielder Quincy Latimore bobbled the ball. Bonfante walked, and he and Cartwright then pulled off a double steal, with Cartwright scoring from third to make 3-0.
In the nightcap, Chase D'Arnaud put West Virginia in front with a two-run homer in the third inning as the Power ended their scoreless drought against Lexington at 26 innings. The Power added a run in the fourth, but Lexington tied it in their half of the fourth on a two-out, three-run homer by catcher Federico Hernandez.
West Virginia went in front for good in the top of the fifth against Jose Trinidad (0-2), who was pitching in relief of starter Arcenio Leon. Andrew Walker doubled with one out. Calvin Anderson struck out, but Edward Garcia walked and Bobby Spain doubled, sending Garcia to third. Erik Huber was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Then Greg Picart hit a pop fly that the Legends allowed to fall in fair territory between the plate and mound, and two more runs scored to make it 6-3. Kyle McPherson (1-0) pitched the final three innings of the seven-inning game to earn the victory.
The Legends go on the road to take on the Hickory Crawdads in a four-game series beginning Tuesday night. Lexington returns home for a Saturday night game at 7:05 p.m. against the Bowling Green Hot Rods.
