Lexington Legends outfielder J.D. Martinez has been named South Atlantic League Player of the Week for July 5-11, SAL President Eric Krupa announced Monday.
For the week, Martinez batted .500 (10 hits in 20 at bats) with four home runs, two doubles, eight runs batted in and seven runs scored.
Through games of July 12, Martinez leads the league in batting average at .358, hits with 122, doubles with 31, on base percentage at .427, slugging percentage at .589, extra base hits with 48, runs scored with 80, and total bases with 201. His 62 RBI rank him second in the league to teammate Kody Hinze, who has 68. Martinez is third in home runs with 14, behind Justin Bass of Greensboro with 16 and Ian Gac of Kannapolis with 15.
"To say the least, J.D. has been fun to watch play this summer," said Legends General Manager Andy Shea. "He's a true five-tool player, and he plays every game like it's his last. I'm happy the league recognized him for his efforts this week."
Martinez and the Legends will open a five-game homestand against Hickory Wednesday night at Applebee's Park. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
