Legends' Devenski Throws No-Hitter in 10-0 Win

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Lexington Legends' right-hander Chris Devenski pitched a no-hitter Saturday night as the Legends defeated the Rome Braves 10-0.

Devenski struck out 16 batters and walked one. Rome's Kyle Kubitza drew a base on balls with one out in the fifth inning. Kubitza was just one of two Rome batters to reach base. The other, Ryan Query, grounded into a force play after Kubitza's walk.

The closest Rome came to a hit was a drive to right center field by Elmer Reyes with one out in the sixth inning, but center fielder Teoscar Hernandez made a running catch near the warning track.

The no-hitter was the first by an individual Legends pitcher. Derek Stanford, Chris George and Kirk Saarloos combined for a no-hitter on July 30, 2001, the Legends' first season.

Matt Duffy's three-run home run in the first inning gave Devenski all the offense he would need, but the Legends were far from finished at the plate.

Lexington added two more runs in the fourth. Ruben Sosa led off with a single, and then Jordan Kreke followed with a double, moving Sosa to third. Teoscar Hernandez followed with a groundout to shortstop Elmer Reyes, allowing Sosa to score and moving Kreke to third. Nolan Fontana then singled to right field, plating Kreke.

Duffy hit his second homer of the game leading off the fifth inning. With one out, Chris Epps singled, moved to second on a walk to Sosa, and third when Jordan Kreke was hit by a pitch. Epps scored on a sacrifice fly by Hernandez, giving the Legends a 7-0 lead.

The Legends extended their lead to 9-0 in the sixth. Moon led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. One out later, Duffy doubled to left-center field, scoring Moon. Jobduan Morales followed with a single to right field, driving home Duffy.

Lexington scored its final run in the seventh. Fontana led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Moon. After Johnson walked to load the bases, Duffy grounded into a double play as Fontana scored.

Devenski began the ninth inning by striking out Fernando de los Santos, and then got Elmer Reyes to ground out softly to second base for the second out. With a Whitaker Bank Ballpark crowd of 5,951 encouraging him, Davenski struck out Tony Mueller on an 0-2 pitch to end the game, setting off an on-field celebration as his teammates sprinted to the mound.

Devenski, 21, joined the Legends August 3 as part of a trade between the Legends' parent club, the Houston Astros, and the Chicago White Sox. He had pitched against the Legends earlier this season as a member of the Kannapolis Intimidators, the White Sox affiliate in the South Atlantic League. He now has a combined record of 8-7 with Kannapolis and Lexington.

Lexington and Rome will play game four of their series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch at Whitaker Bank Ballpark is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
