Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Casey McGehee picked up two hits, drove in three runs, and scored twice, including the go-ahead run in the eighth, to lead the Charleston RiverDogs to an 8-2 win over the Augusta GreenJackets in South Atlantic League action at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Saturday night.
The RiverDogs second win in a row ups their record to 71-63 (32-35 in the second half). Augusta falls to 69-68 (37-31 in the second half) in 2012.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the top of the eighth, Cito Culver worked a one out walk off reliever Chris Marlowe (1-9). Two batters later, McGehee (2-5, 3 RBI, 2 runs) drove a single into left field to plate the tying run. After taking third on another single, he scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch for a 3-2 advantage. He added some insurance in the ninth by dropping a two-run single into center. Francisco Arcia and Dante Bichette, Jr. also drove in runs in the ninth as part of a five-run rally that put the game out of reach.
Melvin Mercedes (1-1) got the victory for pitching two innings of scoreless relief and Charlie Short who tossed the eighth and the ninth, earned his first save in affiliated baseball.
Augusta put up the game's first run right away on an RBI double by Garrett Buechele in the first inning. They went up 2-0 in the fourth when Devin Harris (2-5, HR, RBI, run) hit a rocket over the left field wall for his eighth home run of the season.
Charleston got one back in the fifth when Casey Stevenson doubled to score Rob Refsnyder (2-4, 2 runs), cutting the lead in half. The score remained frozen at 2-1 after that until the eighth.
Game three of this season ending four-game series takes place on Sunday starting at 5:35 pm. Charleston will start RHP Brett Gerritse (4-5, 3.90 ERA), while Augusta's starter is TBD.
