Legends Close Out First Half with 4-2 Win Over Greenville

The Lexington Legends closed out the first half of the 2009 South Atlantic League season with a 4-2 win over the Greenville Drive in Greenville Sunday.

The win allowed the Legends to take sole possession of third place in the Southern Division for the first half, one game ahead of Rome. Greenville had clinched the title with its win over the Legends Saturday night, and Charleston was second.

Jordan Lyles struck out 11 in six innings and picked up the win to move his record to 4-6. He leads the South Atlantic League with 98 strikeouts for the season. Greenville starter Stephen Fife (0-1) was the loser despite allowing only one run in five innings.

The Legends never trailed. They took the lead in the second inning on consecutive two-out singles by Freddie Hernandez, Kyle Miller and Andy Simunic. Lexington added another run in the sixth on a walk to Jay Austin, a sacrifice by Albert Cartwright and a two-out single by Ebert Rosario.

In the seventh, Eric Suttle's double drove home Simunic, who had singled. Suttle stole third, and came home on Austin's single to the make the score 4-0 Lexington.

David Marks hit a two-run homer for Greenville in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Ashton Mowdy. The homer was one of only three Greenville hits allowed by the Legends. Patrick Urckfitz closed out the game with a perfect ninth to earn his seventh save.
