Divisional Champs Drive Drop Finale, 4-2
June 21, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - A day after clinching the Southern Division title, the Drive (39-29) felt the effects of last night's celebration, falling 4-2 to the Lexington Legends (35-34) in the first half finale.
Both pitching staffs recorded strikeout after strikeout, combining for 30 punchouts - 15 by each team. Stephen (0-2) suffered the loss despite firing 5.0 strong innings in which he tied a career-best with seven strikeouts. The former Utah Ute allowed a run on four hits.
However, Jordan Lyles (4-6) was not to be outdone as he tossed 6.0 scoreless frames. The right-hander allowed only four baserunners - a pair of base hits and walks - while striking out 11.
Trailing 4-0, it was until the bottom of the eighth that Greenville broke their string of zeroes. Following a leadoff walk by Ryan Dent, David Marks belted a two-run shut off Ashton Mowdy to cut the Drive's deficit in half.
That would remain the final score, however, as Patrick Urckfitz was perfect in the ninth, striking out two, to record his seventh save of the season.
Lexington began their scoring in the top of the second, on Andy Simunic's RBI-single. The Legends added three more runs off of reliever Mike Lee, with one coming in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
In Lee's first inning of action, the Legends played small ball as Jay Austin drew a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on Albert Cartwright's sacrifice bunt before scoring on Ebert Rosario's single.
Simunic led off the seventh with a single, went to second on Jorge De Leon's sacrifice bunt and scored on Eric Suttle's RBI-double. Austin then followed with an RBI-single to round out the Legends scoring.
Following the South Atlantic League's three-day break for the 50th Annual All-Star Game from Charleston, West Virginia, play will resume with the start of the second half of the regular season. The Drive begin away from Fluor Field with stops against the Asheville Tourists and Charleston RiverDogs.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on the Fourth of July versus the Savannah Sand Gnats. Single-game tickets, group outings, and luxury accommodations can be purchased by calling (864) 240-4500, or visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com for more information.
