West Virginia Powers by Crawdads in First Half Finale

HICKORY, N.C. - Despite a late rally to cut the deficit in half, the Hickory Crawdads fell, 12-6, to the West Virginia Power before 1,421 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Sunday afternoon, wrapping up the first half of the 2009 season.

LHP Martin Perez made the start for the Crawdads (33-36) and pitched a pair of scoreless innings before being relieved by RHP Jake Brigham (2-4). The Power (27-43) welcomed Brigham to the mound with three runs in the third, one in the fourth on a leadoff homer by 2B Danny Bomback and four more in the fifth, pulling ahead 8-0 through five innings.

While the Power bats opened the lead, LHP Rudy Owens (8-1) kept the Crawdads bats in check, carrying a perfect game through five innings. LHP Yoon-Hee Nam entered the game to start the sixth inning and surrendered four runs in the inning, accounting for a 12-0 lead for the Power.

RHP Neil Ramirez, RHP Matt Nevarez and RHP Fabio Castillo combined to keep the Power at 12 runs the rest of the way, and the Crawdads got on the board in the bottom of the ninth with six runs against RHP Yoffri Martinez.

CF David Paisano opened the inning with a double and trotted home on a one-out, two-run homer by RF Mike Bianucci to straight-away center field. 3B Matt West followed with a solo shot of his own over the left field wall, making it 12-3. LF Cristian Santana then doubled down the left field line and moved to third on a 1B Jason Ogata single. C Leonel De Los Santos brought Santana in with an RBI single, his third hit of the game. SS Leury Garcia got in on the rally with an RBI double, scoring Ogata, moving De Los Santos to third and chasing Martinez from the game. Facing, RHP Wilson Ortiz, 2B Andres James then capped the six-run inning with an RBI single, bringing in De Los Santos and making it 12-6. However, Ortiz retired Paisano and Hollander in their second at-bats of the inning, getting out of the bottom of the ninth with the win for West Virginia.
