Hagerstown Suns News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (31-36) lost the final game of the first half of the 2009 South Atlantic League season to the Delmarva Shorebirds (36-33) by a score of 3-2 on Sunday.
Hagerstown got off to an early lead when Derek Norris hit his league-leading 14th home run. The solo shot also gave the Suns catcher his SAL-best 51st RBI of the season.
Delmarva came right back in the bottom of the first with a run on two hits against starting pitcher Paul Demny.
Demny settled down after the first inning and did not allow another run in his five innings of work.
The Suns took the lead in the top of the fifth inning as with no outs and the bases loaded, Robby Jacobsen scored from third base on a wild pitch. A double play and a strike out ended the threat from the Suns, however, Delmarva responded with two runs off reliever Drew Storen (0-1) in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead.
Storen struck out the side in the sixth, but three consecutive two-out hits, including two doubles, gave Delmarva the 3-2 lead. Storen ended up with the loss, his first of the season.
Hagerstown threatened in the top of the ninth but pinch-runner Chris Curran was thrown out at the plate on a double by Charlie Fermaint, and Fermaint was stranded at third.
Brendan Cooney recorded his 11th save of the season for Delmarva.
The Suns will start the second half of the season on Thursday, June 25th with a five game series at Classic Park in Eastlake, OH against the Lake County Captains. Game one of the series will start at 7:00.
The Hagerstown Suns play at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD and are a Class "A" affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
