Legends Acquire Four NBA First Round Draft Picks

Frisco, TX (November 2, 2010) - How many Legends does it take to make a team legendary?
Well, after the 2010 NBA D-League Draft on Monday night, the Texas Legends are going to give 15 players a chance at making history on the team's opening day roster.
The Legends drafted fourth in the eight-round draft, selecting last year's NCAA Division II Player of the Year, 6-foot-11 forward Matt Rogers out of Southwestern Baptist University.
After Rogers, general manager Spud Webb and Legends owner Donnie Nelson selected seven more players in front of a live, capacity crowd at Lochrann's Irish Pub & Eatery.
The eight draft picks will join six players the Legends acquired through the D-League's allocation rules and one player the Legends traded for lon Monday to create the preliminary Legends roster. All 15 players will attend training camp in Frisco next week.
Of the 15 players, four are former NBA Draft first-round picks. The NBA D-League has never before seen more than one former first round NBA draft pick who was not an assigned player on a team.
Headlining those four is 6-foot-4 guard Antonio Daniels, the Legends' second-round draft pick. Daniels, with 12 seasons of experience in the NBA, was the fourth overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft. Since then he has played for six teams, including the Seattle Supersonics, where he averaged a career-high 11.2 points per game in 2004-05.
The other former first-round picks are:
- Forward Sean Williams, the 17th pick in 2007, with three years of NBA experience and more than 100 NBA games played.
- Guard Rashad McCants, the 14th pick in 2005, with 249 NBA games. McCants averaged a career-high 14.0 points per game in 2007-08 with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Williams and McCants were acquired through the D-League's allocation rules.
- Reece Gaines, acquired through a trade with Bakersfield for a 2011 second round draft pick. The 6-foor-6 guard was drafted 15th in 2003, and has played three seasons in the NBA.
After the four former first-rounders, the Legends turned their eyes to an impressive list of former college players:
- Justin Dentmon, formerly of Washington University, was drafted in the third round. Dentmon spent last season playing for Afula Israel, where he averaged more than 20 points per game. In his senior year for the Huskies, Dentmon made 41.2 percent of his three-point attempts.
- Kelvin Lewis, who graduated from Houston University in the spring, will join the Legends after winning the Conference USA Tournament MVP during his last few collegiate games. Lewis averaged 15.5 points per game in his final season with the Cougars, and hit 39.7 percent of his three-point attempts.
- Moussa Seck, drafted in the fifth round Monday night, participated with the Dallas Mavericks summer league team in 2009 and 2010. The 7'4 center brings a shot blocking presence second-to-none.
- Booker Woodfox, the sixth round pick and Dallas native, also has D-League experience. After graduating from Creighton in 2009, Woodfox was picked up by the Erie Bayhawks midway through last season. The 6-foot-1 guard is known as a three-point threat, making 47.6 percent of his attempts from deep during his senior season at Creighton.
- Curtis Terry played 16 games with the L.A. D-Fenders in 2008-09 before heading to Angola to play for Petro Luanda. Terry led UNLV to the Sweet 16 in his junior year there in 2006-07.
- The Legends' last draft pick was Reece Hampton, a 6-foot-5 forward out of Adams State University.
The final four players invited to the Legends inaugural training camp were all acquired through the D-League's allocation rules. Two of the four are well-known throughout the D-League, and the other two are products of the Legends' local tryouts.
NBA D-League veteran Keith Clark, a forward, spent last season with the L.A. D-Fenders, where he shot 52.9 percent from the field. Joining him is guard Dar Tucker, known for his leaping abilities ever since he skied over 6-foot-11 Brian Butch to win the 2010 NBA D-League Dream Factory Slam Dunk Contest.
From their local tryouts, the Legends discovered Pierce Caldwell and Andre Gatlin. Caldwell graduated from the University of Incarnate Word in the spring after averaging 18.1 points per game in his final season.
Ten of these 15 players will make up the inaugural Legends roster that will take the floor in the NBA D-League season opener on Nov. 18 as the Legends take on defending champion Rio Grande on national television.
