Latz and Wood Ducks Blank Keys

KINSTON, NC - Jake Latz turned 6.2 innings of shutout baseball as the Down East Wood Ducks (44-18) shutout the Frederick Keys (28-32) 4-0 on Saturday night at Grainger Stadium. With the loss, the Keys have now dropped a season-high six games in-a-row and have been blanked twice on the roadtrip.

Latz (5-1) earned his fifth straight win allowing just three hits over 6.2 innings. He walked two and punched out four and allowed only one runner to reach second base.

His counterpart, Brenan Hanifee, turned in a strong effort as well, but was tagged with the loss. Tying a season-high with six innings pitched, the right-hander surrendered two runs (one earned) on six hits. Hanifee (4-5) walked three and struck out two.

Down East got on the board in the bottom of the first, the 13th time in the last 14 contests the Wood Ducks had scored the first run. Yonny Hernandez reached on an error by Sean Miller, moved to second on a sac-bunt and scored on a single by Diosbel Arias.

JP Martinez doubled the lead in the fourth with an opposite field home run to right, before the Wood Ducks doubled the lead in the eighth. With the bases loaded, Tyler Depreta-Johnson hit a two-run single to left.

Michael Matuella and Jefferson Medina combined to work 2.1 scoreless innings of three-hit relief.

The Keys and Wood Ducks conclude their four-game series on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Mike Baumann (1-3, 3.30) starts for the Keys and will be opposed by Down East right-hander Reid Anderson (2-2, 4.10).
