Today, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans continue their four-game series against the Winston-Salem Dash (a Chicago White Sox affiliate) with a twin bill with the first game beginning at 4:00 p.m. This evening, LHP Luis Lugo (1-2, 3.25 ERA) starts for the Birds in game one against RHP Jorgan Cavanerio (1-0, 3.74 ERA). Game two will feature RHP Paul Richan (6-2, 4.13) against RHP Jake Elliott (3-1, 3.72). Coverage begins at 3:45 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, TuneIn and the MiLB First Pitch app.

PELICANS DROP FOURTH STRAIGHT, LOSE SERIES OPENER

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans fell behind early and could not come back in a 5-2 loss to the Winston-Salem Dash on Thursday from BB&T Ballpark. The Dash plated a run in the first on an RBI double from Jamison Fisher and another in the second when Craig Dedelow homered to make it 2-0. Carlos Perez added on with an RBI single in the fourth before the Pelicans found the scoreboard in the sixth when Cam Balego was hit by a pitch. The Dash answered that run with two tallies of their own. The Pelicans volleyed back with a Balego RBI single in the eighth, but they could not muster any more offense. Manny Rodriguez and Tyler Peyton combined for 2.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in the loss.

CHECK OUT THAT IMPROVEMENT

Aramis Ademan has completely turned around his offensive game in 2019. After finishing last in the Carolina League in 2018 with a .207 batting average, the now 20-year-old shortstop is hitting .282/.395/.410 over 49 games so far this season. Over his last 11 games, he is hitting .405 (15-for-37)/.463/.432. During those 11 contests, he has recorded six multi-hit games. After hitting three home runs and driving in 38 in 114 games in 2018, Ademan has already homered three times this season (within one of his career-best four in 2017) and plated 22. If he were to play that same number of contests, 114, he is on pace for 51 RBIs.

THE BEST SHEEP IN THE FLOCK

Pelicans reliever Ryan Lawlor has been a force out of the bullpen in his first five outings of the season. After his scoreless 2.1 innings on Monday, Lawlor owns a 0.96 ERA (1 ER over 9.1 IP) with 16 strikeouts and just three walks over his 9.1 frames. Over his last four outings, he has struck out 13 in just 7.2 innings. Before being promoted to Myrtle Beach, Lawlor went 2-2 with a 1.83 ERA over nine appearances with Low-A South Bend.

THE FASTEST SETTLER AT THE TABLE

Outfielder Zach Davis has made a name for himself on the bases in his career. After another swipe on Monday, Davis leads the league with 20 stolen bases. Because he has just played in 37 games, he is averaging 0.54 stolen bases per game. He has stolen two bases in the same game three times in 2019. The former Texas Tech Red Raider led all of the Cubs farm system with 38 stolen bases in 2018 and has stolen 82 bases in 220 games. Not only has Davis been running, but he has been hitting too. The switch hitter is batting .391/.462/.478 over his last six games and has recorded three multi-hit games in a row and four over his last five games.

TAKING THAT BALL FOR A RIDE

Kevonte Mitchell has completely turned around his season after a tough April. After hitting just .173/.247/.296 in April with three home runs, he has hit .228/.314/.478 since. Over those 27 games, he has five doubles, six home runs, 16 RBIs and 17 runs. He is now tied for second the league in home runs with nine (David Masters of Potomac, Craig Dedelow of Winston-Salem and Seth Beer of Fayetteville). Mario Feliciano of Carolina hit two home runs on Monday, added another on Tuesday and yet another on Thursday to drive his total up to 13. Mitchell just hit four home runs in 80 games with the Pelicans in 2018. His career-high 11 home runs came in 2017 with South Bend.

IT'S GOING TO GO UP FROM HERE

For the first time since 2010, the Pelicans are under the .500 mark through their first 60 games of the season. In 2010, the Pelicans were 22-38 through 60 contests and finished the season 58-82. In 2009, they also started 22-38 in their first 60 games before finishing the season 53-84. In recorded club history (dating back to 2005), the 20-40 start to the season is the worst during that stretch.

THE DASTARDLY DASH

For the first time in 2019, the Pelicans will visit BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem. The first time the Pelicans met with the Dash this season, the Birds took three-of-four thanks to stellar pitching performances. Over the four games, the Pelicans only allowed nine runs (2.25 ERA) to the White Sox affiliate. In 2018, the Dash dominated Myrtle Beach, going 14-4 against the Birds, including a 7-2 mark in the Camel City.

RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY

The Pelicans are the only team in the Carolina League that has not had a game cancelled this season due to rain. Through 60 contests, the Pelicans have just had five affected by mother nature this season, with two coming at home and two on the road.

PELICAN POINTS

We have seen some great plays defensively this season, warmly led by the MiLB play of the month from Javier Assad in May when he kicked the ball to first...The Dash now have won 16 of their last 20 games after beating the Pelicans on Thursday...The four-game skid by the Birds is the fifth streak of four games or longer that has isolated Myrtle Beach in the Southern Division. The best thing about MiLB is that there are two halves, so the Pelicans will have a chance in the second half.
