Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Kannapolis, NC - Josh Phegley's two-out infield single scored Brandon Short from third, giving the Kannapolis Intimidators a 3-2 win over the Augusta GreenJackets on Thursday night in a game where the majority of the scoring occurred in the final inning and a half.
With the score tied at one and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Drew Garcia's bouncer off Josh Mazzola's chest at first brought in the go-ahead run from second to give Kannapolis the lead. The Jackets were not finished, tying the game with two outs in the ninth inning. Jose Flores drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch from Intimidators closer Dan Remenowsky. Johnny Monell stepped up as a pinch-hitter and delivered the game-tying double to the wall in right-center on another 3-2 pitch to even the score at two-all.
After two quick outs, Short worked a ninth-inning walk off Kyle Woodruff. Jared Mitchell's single put men at the corners to set up Phegley's heroics on his first hit of the series.
The Intimidators and Jackets traded homers to provide the 1-1 tie headed into the eighth. Kyle Shelton drilled a solo shot to left off Ari Ronick to give Kannapolis the lead in the second. Josh Mazzola answered with a solo home run deep to left off the visiting clubhouse to tie the game one pitch after two baserunning miscues cost the Jackets outs and men aboard the basepaths.
Ronick turned in one of his finest performances of the year in the no decision, firing 7.2 innings before his control faltered late. All three of his walks came in his last two innings of work. Otherwise, he allowed just two runs on three hits with three strikeouts. His defense came to his rescue, turning two double plays behind the crafty lefty.
Woodruff (2-1) took the loss for Augusta, allowing a run on three hits with a walk and strikeout in an inning of work. Remenowsky (5-3) picks up the win despite blowing the save in the top of the ninth.
The GreenJackets will send Mike Loree (6-6, 4.43) to the mound, needing back-to-back wins to split the series. Kannapolis will counter with lefty Charlie Leesman (9-4, 2.68). First pitch from Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium against the Intimidators is 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home for a nine-game homestand spread across ten days, starting on July 30th against the Greenville Drive. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
