Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - RHP Neil Ramirez tossed five one-hit, shutout innings to start the game and help lead the Crawdads to the 8-3 win against the Rome Braves, before 2,427 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Thursday evening.
The Crawdads (15-11, 48-47) came out swinging against RHP Dimasther Delgado (1-5) with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first. CF David Paisano led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a walk drawn by 2B Mike Hollander. 1B Erik Morrison followed with a single to right field, loading the bases for 3B Matt West. West placed a single perfectly in the right-center gap to plate Paisano and keep the bases loaded. One out later, RF Miguel Alfonzo lined a pitch to right field, scoring both Hollander and Morrison and putting Hickory ahead 3-0.
Ramirez (3-2) dealt two more scoreless frames, before the Crawdads bats added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. With one away in the frame, West was hit by a pitch to get on and start the rally. He then advanced to second on a wild pitch, before coming home on an RBI single hit down the right field line by C Doug Hogan, who advanced to second base on an error at the end of the play. Hogan came in from second later in the inning on a two-out RBI single by LF Jared Bolden, putting the Crawdads ahead by five.
Ramirez continued to stifle the Braves bats with scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth before being relieved. In his five shutout frames, Ramirez allowed only one hit and two walks, while striking out two. LHP Yoon-Hee Nam took over on the mound to start the sixth, and was welcomed to the game by three runs put up by the Braves (10-17, 45-52) in the frame, pulling to within two, 5-3. Nam was relieved after just a third of an inning by RHP Tyler Tufts, who struck out back-to-back Braves to get out of the sixth with no further damage done.
Tufts also dealt scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth, before the Crawdads struck for some insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning. Alfonzo led off the inning with a single and scored all the way from first base on an RBI double hit by DH Cristian Santana. Bolden then drew a walk to join Santana on base, and both advanced to third and second on a SS Leury Garcia sacrifice bunt. Santana ended up scoring on a sacrifice fly to left field by Hollander and Bolden came in on a passed ball, putting the Crawdads in the 8-3 lead.
RHP Matt Nevarez took over on the mound and closed 8-3 win for the Crawdads with a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two in a row for the final outs in the contest. Ramirez earned his second straight win for the Crawdads, while Delgado was tagged with the loss for the Braves.
