Late Runs Sink Scrappers

(Niles, OH)-The Mahoning Valley Scrappers entered the ninth inning on Monday looking for their first two game winning streak of the season. However the bullpen was unable to close the game, allowing three runs with two outs to allow the Tri-City ValleyCats to rally for a 6-5 win.

The Scrappers jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs Erlin Cerda doubled to drive in Andrew Calica for a 1-0 lead.

Mahoning Valley would add to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Silento Sayles started the inning with a single. After a sacrifice bunt moved Sayles to second, Gabriel Mejia would single to push the lead to 2-0. Michael Brantley, in a rehab appearance, would follow with a single to move Mejia to second. Calica would then bring Mejia in with an RBI single to push the lead to 3-0.

The ValleyCats got back into the game with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs Ryne Birk doubled to leftfield to score Chuckie Robinson and Kevin Martir to cut the Scrappers lead to 3-2.

Tri-City tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs it would be Birk again delivering with an RBI single to plate Martir and tie the game 3-3.

In the bottom of the eighth inning the Scrappers would reclaim the lead. Sayles started the inning with a double to center. Alexis Pantoja would sacrifice him to third. Sayles would then score on a throwing error from Ronnie Dawson to put the Scrappers back up 4-3.

The Scrappers bullpen would be unable to close out the game in the ninth inning. With one out, Devon Stewart would allow two walks and a single to load the bases. Ryan Perez would then come on. After Perez struck out Taylor Jones for the second out, a wild pitch would allow Alex DeGoti to score the tying run. Randy Cesar would then put Tri-City on top for good with a two out two run single.

A Nate Winfrey homerun in the ninth would get Mahoning Valley back to within a run. However, Gavin Collins would be stranded on base as the tying run to end the game.

Luis Jimenez started and worked4.2 innings. He allowed two earned runs on three hits. Jimenez walked five and struck out two. Ryan Colegate would then go 2.2 innings in relief. He allowed no runs on four hits. Colegate struck out four. Randy Valladares would then come on to face one batter and retired him on one pitch. Stewart (0-3) took the loss in 0.2 innings of relief. He allowed three earned runs on one hit. He walked three and struck out one. Perez would take a blown save in 0.2 innings of relief. Stewart allowed one hit while striking out one.

The Scrappers (6-18) and ValleyCats (13-11) continue their series on Tuesday night at Eastwood Field. Aaron Civale will start for the Scrappers. First pitch is set for 7:05pm. Tickets are available online or by calling the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000.
