AUBURN, NY --- Xavier Altamirano and Yordy Alejo combined on a four-hit shutout, while Nate Mondou and Luis Barrera both had a pair of RBI singles to lead the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 4-0 victory over the Auburn Doubledays in New York-Penn League action Monday night at Falcon Park.

Altamirano (2-0) blanked Auburn over the first seven innings on just 73 pitches, allowing the four Doubleday hits with no walks and four strikeouts, to lower his ERA on the season to 0.42 (one earned run in 21 1/3 innings). Altamirano retired the side in order four times, while in two other innings allowed a single before a double play and a caught stealing. Closest Auburn came to scoring was the fourth when Ryan Ripken (son of Cal Ripken Jr.) doubled with two outs and Oliver Ortiz followed with a single to right, but Ripken was gunned down at the plate by rightfielder Jhonny Rodriguez to end the inning.

Alejo picked up his second save of the year as he retired six of the seven batters he faced over the last two innings with the only base runner reaching on a two-out error in the ninth, The shutout victory was the third of the season for the Lake Monsters pitching staff and lowered Vermont's NY-Penn League-leading team ERA to 2.27 overall.

Mondou gave Vermont a 1-0 lead in the third with the first of his two RBI singles and Barrera doubled the lead to 2-0 in the seventh with the first of his two RBI singles. Both of those hits scored Steven Pallares, who finished the night 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Mondou and Barrera's other RBI singles came in the ninth. With his 2-for-5 and two RBI-night, Mondou is nw 7-for-14 with seven RBI over the last three games.

Barrera finished with three hits for his eighth multi-hit game of the season, while Miguel Mercedes and Eric Marinez added two hits apiece in the Lake Monsters 13-hit attack. Vermont (13-11) has now won three of its last four games and is 9-4 over its last 13 games, while Auburn dropped to 12-12 overall with the loss.

The Lake Monsters and Doubledays will play the second of the three-game series in Auburn on Tuesday at 7:05 pm with 2016 Oakland Athletics first-round pick A.J. Puk scheduled to start on the mound for Vermont in his professional debut. After the series finale on Wednesday, the Lake Monsters return home to historic Centennial Field for a three-game series against Williamsport beginning on Thursday. -monsters- --001a11472316ecaaff053766bf67
