Late Runs Drop Sod Poodles at HODGETOWN

Amarillo, Texas - After Amarillo tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning momentum switched in favor of the RockHounds. Midland scored 10 runs between the seventh and eighth innings to take Thursday night's game at HODGETOWN 13-4 and take a 2-1 series lead.

Scoring Summary: For the second time in as many nights, the RockHounds plated the first runs of the game via the home run. Tonight's came off the bat of Devin Foyle who gave the 'Hounds a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Jake McCarthy hit his third triple of this homestand and scored on a Stone Garrett groundout to draw within one run of the lead. Midland answered back with another homer, this time a leadoff solo home run in the top of the fifth to push their lead back to two runs. The Sod Poodles tied the game during their next at bats after they strung together a pair of hits with two outs. McCarthy drew a walk, allowing him to score from first on a double from Garrett. A single from De La Cruz scored Garrett to knot the game at three a side. Midland broke the game open in the top of the seventh when they scored seven runs. The RockHounds did their damage with a pair of two-run doubles and a two-run home run to make it 10-3 heading into the seventh inning stretch. The RockHounds added another three home runs aided by another home run in the top of the eighth for a 10-run lead. Garrett continued his hot stretch by hitting his team-leading seventh home run of the year to put an end to tonight's scoring.

Soddies Stats: Soddies starter and D-backs' No. 23 rated prospect Matt Tabor set a new single-game high for Amarillo with his 10 strikeouts. He struck out 10 earlier this year when he was with High-A Hillsboro to set a career-high. Stone Garrett extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his single in the first inning. It is the second longest hit streak of his career behind a 12-game stretch from 7/24/15 - 8/6/15 when he was with the Batavia Muckdogs.

Midland Moments: After entering last night's game 0-for-15 since joining the RockHounds, Jake Suddleson has gone 5-for-8 with a pair of home runs and three RBI the last two games.

Tomorrow's Tidbits: This series continues from downtown Amarillo with game four tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM between the two clubs. Left-hander Tyler Holton (0-1, 11.25 ERA) will get the start for the Soddies versus RHP Bryce Conley (3-2, 4.15 ERA). Fans in attendance will be treated to another Friday Night Fireworks Show courtesy of Rush Lasik.

Notes:

Tamed By Tabor: Matt Tabor had his best start of the year since joining the Sod Poodles. He tossed six innings, allowing three runs on four hits while racking up 10 strikeouts.

Set In Stone: Stone Garrett was the only Amarillo player to record multiple hits tonight. He went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run while driving in three runs. Garrett is now 20-for-46 with five home runs, three doubles, and 16 RBI during his 10-game hit streak.

Leggin' It Out: Soddies catcher Dominic Miroglio hit just the third triple of his career in the seventh inning. He hit his previous two in 2018.

Hurt By Homers: Midland tied a single-game high by launching four balls over the HODGETOWN walls. Tulsa also hit four home runs way back in the second game of the year. Corpus was the most recent team to hit four home runs against the Soddies, doing so just four games ago on June 13th here at HODGETOWN.

Chase For The Oil Pan Cup: The chase for the Oil-Pan cup continues in 2021 after the Sod Poodles took the inaugural 2019 season race 17-12. The Oil-Pan Cup is a season-long rivalry between Amarillo and Midland. With their win tonight, Midland has taken a 5-4 advantage here in 2021.

New Leader In The Clubhouse: Stone Garrett's eighth inning solo shot makes him the current team-leader in dingers. Garrett and McCarthy were tied at six.
