Late Run Dooms Y'alls in Loss to Washington
August 18, 2022 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
Washington, Pa. - The Florence Y'alls (33-47) scored the first run for the third consecutive night at Wild Things Park. An early 2-2 tie held until the eighth inning, when the Washington Wild Things (54-27) struck late for a 3-2 Y'alls loss on Thursday.
Florence's opening punch came from an unlikely candidate: Luke Harper. The catcher recorded his first two professional RBI with a single in the top of the second inning.
Washington's response came immediately. Cam Balego, the opposing catcher, launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the second. The score remained tied for the majority of the night, until the Wild Things manufactured a go-ahead run in the eighth.
Jared Mang led off with a double off the wall for Washington against reliever Kent Klyman. A sacrifice bunt moved him to third, then a Hector Roa single brought him home. Roa, Washington's all-time leader in RBI, delivered the game-winning blow.
Florence made things tight in the ninth, putting runners on first and third, but failed to score against closer Lukas Young.
In this wire-to-wire pitchers' duel, both starters were unsung heroes. Florence's Bobby Brabrand, a reliever-turned-starter, delivered another gem. Brabrand gave up just two runs in seven innings while striking out a season-high nine batters. In two starts on the road trip, Brabrand allowed three total runs in 14 innings.
The Y'alls lose the series in Washington two-games-to-one, but put up a tremendous effort in every game. Florence was competitive in all three contests, the last two decided by only one run.
Florence returns home to face the Schaumburg Boomers at Thomas More Stadium tomorrow. Edgar Martinez is the probable starter for a 7:03 p.m. first pitch.
