SCHAUMBURG, ILLINOIS. - The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, were four outs away from securing a victory in game one of their series against Schaumburg but a late rally in the eighth proved to be the difference as the Crushers fell 3-2.
The only runs for Lake Erie came in the third inning. Nick Roark led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Doug Trimble. Aaron Hill followed with a run scoring double and the Crushers led 1-0. Joel McKeithan later grounded out, allowing Trimble to score the second run.
Lake Erie starter Jake Repavich settled in early and cruised through 6.2 innings. He allowed just two hits in the third and then retired 12 in a row before a one out double in the seventh. Kent Hasler came in with two outs and got out of trouble. Repavich would earn a no decision despite a strong performance.
Seth Lucio (1-2) took over in the eighth. After retiring the first two batters, Lucio surrendered a double to Jack Parenty. That brought up Sean Godfrey who hit a two-run home run, tying the game.
The inning continued to spiral after a single by Ty Moore. Zack Weigel reached on a dropped third strike and then Lucio walked Collin Ferguson to load the bases. The go-ahead run came across to score after Kenny Towns walked on four pitches.
Luke Watts came in and got the final out of the inning. Lucio was charged with three runs over 0.2 innings of work.
Lake Erie got the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth but couldn't score against Jake Joyce who earned his 12 save of the year. Darrell Thompson (4-0) got the win in relief.
Lake Erie managed only six hits in the game. They had just two hits in the final six innings of play.
Lake Erie drops to 42-40 with the loss and Schaumburg improves to 41-41. Game two is tomorrow night at 6:00 CDT. Alex Romero (8-6) gets the start for the Crushers while Kit Fowler (1-6) goes for the Boomers.
