Normal CornBelters News Release

O'FALLON, Mo. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, fell behind by double digits early, but despite holding their opponents to just one more run, fell 12-9 to the River City Rascals on Friday night at CarShield Field.

Jacinto Garcia (5-4) lasted only 1 1/3 innings and took the loss, giving up 9 runs (earned) on 7 hits with 3 walks and no strikeouts. The Rascals scored four runs in the opening frame and seven more in the second inning, but were held to a sixth-inning run for the remainder of their scoring.

The CornBelters scored four times in both the fourth and sixth innings and tallied once in the ninth but could not overcome the large early deficit. Santiago Chirino drove in three runs and Chris Iriart hit his Frontier League-leading 22nd home run to power the Belters offense.

Josh Kimborowicz (6-4) worked 5 1/3 innings for the win despite giving up 10 Normal hits and 7 runs (5 earned).

The CornBelters (43-36) remain on top of the Frontier League West Division, two games in front of the Southern Illinois Miners and three games ahead of the Rascals (42-41).

The teams rematch on Saturday at 6:35 p.m. at CarShield Field with the series finale Sunday at 6:05 p.m. After Monday off, the Belters return to the Corn Crib for a three-game series with the Florence Freedom beginning Tuesday night.
