Late Rally Falls Short in Laredo

LAREDO, TX - The Winnipeg Goldeyes battled back from a 10-4 deficit to bring the game within one but couldn't beat the defending champion Laredo Lemurs at Uni-Trade Stadium on Wednesday night. Instead, the Lemurs avoided the sweep, taking the three-game series finale 10-9.

With the loss, the Goldeyes are now 4-3, while the Lemurs improve to 6-4.

A late-game rally saw Winnipeg score three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth - while holding the Lemurs scoreless through those innings - to cut Laredo's lead to 10-9. Casio Grider pinch hit a two-out single, stole second and made it to third on an error in the top ninth, but Wes Darvill ended the game on a fly out to Laredo's pitcher.

Despite the loss, Goldeyes hitting coach Tom Vaeth said he was happy with how the team rallied in the final innings.

"To think we'd have a chance like that in the ninth with the tying run on third, it's a promising sign," he said after the game. "We made it interesting at the end."

Both teams kept it interesting through almost four hours of play.

David Rohm extended his hitting streak to seven games with an RBI single that scored Maikol Gonzalez and gave the Goldeyes a 1-0 lead in the first.

The Lemurs responded with three runs - all scored on RBI singles - in the bottom second, but the Goldeyes pushed back with three runs of their own. Jacob Rogers singled to score Gonzalez, and Josh Romanski singled for a pair of RBIs and his first hit of the season.

Laredo put up another three-hit inning in the bottom third and added four in the bottom sixth to extend their lead to 10-4, but the Goldeyes weren't done yet. Rohm hit his second RBI single of the night to score Gonzalez, and Romanski doubled to score Reggie Abercrombie and Rohm to bring the Goldeyes within three.

Gonzalez added an RBI single and Abercrombie put up an RBI sacrifice hit in the top eighth, but Winnipeg's bats fell silent in the ninth, and Laredo took the tightly contested game 10-9.

Goldeyes starter Duke von Schamann (0-1, 9.00) left the game after he took a ball to the arm. He pitched 2.2 innings but allowed six runs on 10 hits for the loss. Laredo reliever Danny Moskovits (1-0, 0.00) allowed only one hit in two innings for the win, and Jeff Inman (0-0, 2.07) pitched the scoreless ninth for the save.

"I think he's going to be fine. I'm sure he'll be sore for a couple days, but I don't think it'll be any more serious than that," Vaeth said when asked about von Schamann's condition after the game.

In total, the Goldeyes sent five pitchers to the mound on Wednesday night, including Eric Eadington, who signed with the club earlier in the day. The right-hander pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out the first two Lemurs to face him and setting the side down in order.

The Goldeyes have now won their first two regular season series and will look for a third series win over the weekend against the Lincoln Saltdogs.

"It's always good to win a road series, and to do it against the defending champions in their own park . . . I just hope we can carry that to Lincoln for the next series," Vaeth said.

Left-hander Kevin McGovern (0-0, 1.50) will start when the Goldeyes open a three-game road series against the Saltdogs at 6:35 p.m. on Friday before returning to Winnipeg for their home opener against the Sioux Falls Canaries on Monday, May 30.
