Stockton Ports News Release

FRESNO, Ca. - The Ports scored three unanswered and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning but couldn't overcome a seven-run deficit in a 9-5 loss to the Grizzlies on Saturday night at Chukchansi Park in Fresno.

The setback was the Ports' fourth consecutive loss.

After the Ports went down in order in the top of the first inning, the Grizzlies (54-35) took a 3-0 lead after three batters in the bottom of the frame. Fresno leadoff man Adael Amador hit the first pitch he saw from Ports' starter Mitch Myers off the wall in right center and scored when Benny Montgomery singled up the middle to give the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead. The next batter, Yanquiel Fernandez, then hit a two-run homer to left field to extend the Fresno advantage to 3-0.

The Ports (32-57) got on the board in the top of the second. With one out, T.J. Schofield-Sam clubbed a no-doubt solo home run over the wall in right field to get the Ports on the board, making it 3-1.

Fresno got to Myers with the longball again in the bottom of the third. After a leadoff single by Fernandez, Juan Guerrero launched a two-run homer to left field to make it 5-1 Grizzlies.

Leading 6-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Grizzlies once again added on in the bottom of the fifth. With Tyler Baum on in relief of Myers for Stockton, Fresno loaded the bases with nobody out on two walks and a single to start the inning. Zach Kokoska then drew a walk and Ben Sems was hit by a pitch to force home two more runs before Amador plated another on an RBI groundout to give the Grizzlies a 9-2 lead.

With the Fresno lead trimmed to 9-3 on an RBI groundout by Schofield-Sam in the sixth, the Ports made things interesting in the top of the ninth. Junior Perez started the frame with a towering solo home run to center to cut the Fresno lead to 9-4. A single, wild pitch and three walks generated another run for the Ports and loaded the bases with two outs for Danny Bautista, representing the tying run for Stockton, who struck out against Fresno reliever Ever Moya to end the ballgame.

Grizzlies' starter McCade Brown (3-4) got the win, allowing three runs on five hits over six innings while striking out eight. Myers (4-7) took the loss for Stockton surrendering six runs on eight hits in four innings. Moya got the final out to earn his first save of the season.

The Ports will look to salvage the final game of their three-game series in Fresno with the finale on Sunday at Chukchansi Park with first pitch at 5:05 pm.
