San Jose Giants News Release

The San Jose Giants' three-game winning streak was snapped on Saturday night with a 12-3 loss to the Modesto Nuts at John Thurman Field. The Nuts jumped out to an early lead with seven runs over the first three innings and never looked back on their way to the convincing victory. San Jose (51-38, 11-12 second half) and Modesto have now split the first two games of the weekend series.

Jared Dupere (2-for-4) had a pair of singles while Carter Williams (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) extended his hitting streak to 13 games for the Giants in defeat. Every player in the Nuts lineup had at least one hit as part of a 12-hit offensive attack. San Jose pitching also issued nine walks and hit two batters.

The Giants fell behind early on Saturday as Modesto took advantage of a key San Jose error to score three runs in the bottom of the first. Manuel Mercedes made the start on the mound for the Giants and surrendered a leadoff double to deep right off the bat of Ben Ramirez before Harry Ford walked with one out and Robert Perez Jr. singled to load the bases. Jonatan Clase was up next and his grounder to the right side deflected off the glove of first baseman Garrett Frechette for an error and bounced into shallow right field. Clase was credited with one RBI on the play as Ramirez scored while Ford also came home thanks to the miscue giving the Nuts a 2-0 lead. Freuddy Batista followed with an RBI groundout as Perez Jr. scored to make it 3-0. Only one of the three runs charged to Mercedes in the inning were earned.

San Jose got one run back in the top of the second as Dupere led off with a single before an error on Williams' grounder put runners on first and second. After Alexander Suarez struck out and a wild pitch advanced the runners, Anyesber Sivira hit a sacrifice fly to trim the Modesto lead to 3-1.

Mercedes bounced back with a perfect bottom of the second and had retired six straight Nuts hitters until Ford was plunked with one out in the bottom of the third. A four-pitch walk to Perez Jr. followed before Clase knocked in another run with an RBI single. Batista was up next and he produced his second RBI groundout of the game as the Modesto lead increased to 5-1. A third run in the inning would eventually score on a Mercedes wild pitch to make it 6-1. Back-to-back two-out walks issued by Mercedes then prompted a pitching change before Milkar Perez greeted new pitcher Spencer Bivens with an RBI single for a 7-1 Nuts advantage.

Modesto added another run in the bottom of the fourth against Bivens on Batista's two-out RBI single to make it 8-1.

The Giants pulled within 8-3 with single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings, but would get no closer. In the top of fifth, Suarez led off with a double to deep right center, moved to third on Sivira's single and scored on Frechette's bloop single into shallow left center. An inning later, Williams smacked a one-out RBI double to right plating Dupere, who had started the inning with a single, to cut the deficit to 8-3.

San Jose though would not muster another hit after Williams' double and the Nuts blew the game wide open late with two runs in both of the seventh and eighth innings. Joe Kemlage was an out away from tossing three scoreless innings of long relief for the Giants, but Edwin Arroyo produced a two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh off the left-hander to stretch the lead to 10-3. Then in the eighth, Kemlage issued a pair of walks before Brett Rodriguez and Milkar Perez came through with consecutive two-out RBI singles off of Julio Rodriguez to bring the score to its final margin of 12-3.

Modesto starting pitcher Jordan Jackson (6-7) earned the win after striking out eight batters over the first five innings with two runs (one earned) allowed.
