Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, Mass. - Five different Rox players had multiple-hit evenings, but Brockton's 13 base knocks weren't enough to overcome Pittsfield's early offensive output as the Colonials earned an 8-7 victory in a Can-Am League affair at Campanelli Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Colonials took a 6-0 lead off of Rox starter Mike Wlodarczyk, starting with three runs in the third on a two-run double by SS Matt Nandin and an RBI single by 3B Jason Taylor. Pittsfield then added another three in the fourth on an RBI groundout by CF Quentin Davis and 2B Danny Bomback's two-run double.

The score stayed that way until the sixth, when the Rox pushed across a single run. C Scott Wearne, starting behind the plate in place of regular catcher Chris Grossman, singled, went to second on CF Chris Valencia's single, advanced to third on a walk to 1B Melvin Falu, and scored on RF Keith Brachold's sacrifice fly.

Brockton (1-2 second half, 28-22 overall) made things interesting in the seventh, with SS Dominic Ramos leading off the inning with a single and scoring on 3B Jeff Hanson's RBI double. RF Mike Conroy then brought home Hanson with an RBI single of his own, before Valencia drove in 2B Derek Kinzler with a sacrifice fly, putting the score at 6-4, Pittsfield.

The Colonials (2-1, 22-28) extended their lead to three in the eighth inning, with LF Jerod Edmondson's run-scoring double, but the Rox made it a one-run game in their half of the frame on Kinzler's two-out, two-run single.

The ninth inning saw Pittsfield register an important insurance run, with RF Daniel Carte bringing home Bomback with an RBI single off of Brockton reliever Josh Papelbon. The Rox threatened in their half of the ninth, as Falu singled, moved to second on defensive indifference, and scored on DH Clyde Williams' two-out single to make it an 8-7 game. Williams was left stranded, though, as Ramos struck out to end the game.

Wlodarczyk (6-3) took the loss, giving up six runs (three earned) in seven innings of work, fanning three. David Qualben (3-4) picked up the victory for the Colonials, allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings of work, striking out eight.

Carte improved his league-leading average to .400 with a 3-for-5 night, while Bomback, Taylor, DH Rafael Cabreja and Davis each had a pair of hits for the Colonials, who assembled 14 hits overall. On the Brockton side, Wearne, Falu, Hanson, Kinzler and Conroy each had two hits on the evening.

Brockton starts a seven-game road trip on Thursday at Quebec, with Freddy Flores (5-2) facing the Capitales' Michel Simard (3-4) at 7:05 p.m.
