Late Powerplay Goal Spoils Bugs Comeback

March 16, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

FORT WAYNE, IN - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs were only 1:12 away from getting at least one point when Guy Dupuis scored a powerplay goal to give the Fort Wayne Komets a 5-4 victory Wednesday night at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The loss snaps Bossier-Shreveport's five-game winning streak and puts the Mudbugs at 34-25-3 heading into Friday's rematch with Fort Wayne.

Justin Aikins scored a goal and had two assists in the contest, while Kevin Young assisted on three goals as the ‚¬ËœBugs came back from a 4-2 third-period deficit to tie the game at four. Steven Crampton, Jeff Kyrzakos and Andy Contois scored the other goals for the Mudbugs, who gave up a season-high 44 shots while generating 22 of their own.

The ‚¬ËœBugs struck first 5:31 in when Clay Plume's long shot missed the net wide but caromed right off the boards to Steven Crampton, who banked it off goaltender Kevin Reiter and into the net for his 17th goal of the season. Fort Wayne turned the tables and tied the game when Kaleigh Schrock sped down left wing and centered a pass to Artem Podshendyalov, who snuck a shot through Ryan Munce's five-hole at 12:18. Munce made a number of other big saves however as the Mudbugs surrendered a season-high 20 shots in the opening period while getting only six.

Colin Chaulk gave the Komets their first lead in the second frame, beating Munce during an odd-man rush at 6:39. Tab Lardner scored on a mini-breakaway two minutes later to increase the Fort Wayne lead to 3-1. The ‚¬ËœBugs cut that edge to 3-2 when Jeff Kyrzakos deflected Kevin Young's point shot into the net at 10:16, but a powerplay goal from Fort Wayne's P.C. Drouin late in the second period got the two-goal lead back for the home team after two periods.

Bossier-Shreveport caught the Komets in a line change to draw within one again at 5:49 of the third when Kevin Young sent a pass through neutral ice to Justin Aikins, who beat Reiter glove side for his 15th goal of the year. On the powerplay less than two minutes after that, Andy Contois picked up the rebound of a Young point blast and ripped a sharp-angle shot into the net to tie the game at four.

With just 1:54 left in the period, Crampton was whistled for hooking to set up Fort Wayne's eighth powerplay chance of the night. That's when Dupuis one-timed a Podshendyalov pass into the top corner to put the Komets ahead to stay with just 1:12 remaining in regulation.

Bossier-Shreveport finished 2 for 4 on the powerplay, while Fort Wayne scored on 2 of their 8 advantages. Ryan Munce (4-3-1) set a Mudbugs career-high with 39 saves but saw his three-game winning streak end with the loss. Kevin Reiter (12-11-2) stopped 18 shots to move above .500 for the season.

The two teams will be back at it Friday evening at Memorial Coliseum to conclude this week's two-game set and their four-game regular season series. Friday's game will get underway at

7:00 pm Central time with radio coverage starting at 6:45 on News Radio 710 AM KEEL. The game will also be shown live online on CHL-TV.
