Clearwater Threshers News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers capped off an incredible month of June with a come-from-behind, 5-3 victory over the St. Lucie Mets on Sunday afternoon at First Data Field. The win completed the sweep in the three-game series, and wrapped up the six-game road trip with a 5-1 mark. The Threshers also set a season-high with 18 wins during the third month of the season, compared to just seven losses.
Clearwater (46-33, 10-3) fell into an early deficit after the first pitch by Colton Eastman was sent off the pole in right off the bat of Blake Tiberi. The hole grew to 2-0 in the sixth after an RBI single by Jeremy Vasquez.
The road team knotted things up with a two-spot just before the stretch. Jhailyn Ortiz drew a free pass against Tony Dibrell with one out, and advanced to second on Nick Maton's single to right. Luke Miller worked a walk to force Dibrell out of the game in favor of Ezequiel Zabaleta (1-1).
Matt Kroon greeted the reliever with a sacrifice fly to center, plating Ortiz and moving Maton up to third. Jack Conley tied the game with a knock to center to score Maton.
Austin Ross hit the hit Alfredo Escalara to start the bottom of the seventh, and had the runner reach second with a stolen base. The right-hander faced off against Carlos Cortes with two outs, but allowed a run-scoring double to give St. Lucie (40-39, 8-5) its second lead of the game at 3-2.
Ortiz blasted the first pitch of the ninth over the soon-to-be-boardwalk in left field to bring to score to 3-3. Maton followed by stroking a double to the gap in right-center to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. After Miller grounded out to third, Kroon deposited a two-run shot out to left to give the visitors a lead they would not relinquish at 5-3.
Zach Warren (SV, 4) gave up a one-out single to Tiberi in the ninth, but did not allow any damage to complete the weekend sweep.
Luis Carrasco (1-2) earned the win for Clearwater in his first appearance since May 7. The right-hander walked one and struck out a pair in an inning of work.
Clearwater returns to Spectrum Field to start at three-game series against the Fort Myers Miracle beginning Monday, July 1. It has yet to be determined to take the mound for the Threshers against the Miracle's RHP Cole Sands (1-1, 2.20). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Threshers Live! The Pre-game Show on threshersbaseball.com.
Monday features the return of the Dog Days of Summer at Spectrum Field. Dog tickets are just $6 and available at walk-up. Benefits from tickets will go to Canine Estates.
