Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
Weather and field conditions delayed the start of Saturday's game between Hudson Valley and Williamsport for an hour and 55 minutes, and after going up 3-0, the Cutters allowed five in the fifth and dropped game one to the Renegades 5-3.
The game for the second straight night, started as a pitcher's duel. Renegades starter Jeff Ames retired the first nine Cutters in order and Williamsport starter Luis Gonzalez had a no-hitter going until the fifth.
That's when the wheels fell off. With a 3-0 lead, Gonzalez allowed a leadoff double to Joel Caminero. Deshun Dixon then drove home Caminero on a double two batters later. That pulled Gonzalez from the game. He was replaced by Ulises Joaquin, back for his first appearance since a mid-July appendectomy.
Joaquin allowed a Marty Gantt infield to score Jake DePew, before Dixon scored to tie the game. Luke Maile then hit an RBI-single to give the Renegades the lead and Leonardo Reginatto scored Justin O'Conner to cap a five-run inning.
This all came after Williamsport had taken the lead on three runs in the fourth. Larry Greene hit a sac fly to score Roman Quinn, before Chris Serritella hit an RBI-double to left to score Mitch Walding. Yan Carlos Olmo then capped the inning on an RBI-single to left.
But Williamsport is 2-19 when trailing after five innings and again failed to come back in a 5-3 loss.
The Cutters drop to 13-27 and with a Lowell rain out temporarily hold the worst record in the league.
The Cutters hope for good weather tomorrow for game two against the Renegades. First pitch is at 5:05. Every Cutters game can be heard on ESPN Radio 104.1 FM, ESPN 1050 AM, or online at crosscutters.com.
