Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
In a game that started an hour late because of rain during the day, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers fought off the rain and Brooklyn Cyclones to pick up a thrilling come from behind victory, 3-2 at Eastwood Field on Saturday night. The Scrappers pulled out the win in a classic pitcher's duel thanks to a 2 run homerun from Joe Sever with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th inning.Luis DeJesus got the start and continued his stellar season for the Scrappers. He pitched 6 innings and scattered 5 hits. He allowed 2 runs while not allowing a walk and striking out 2. Michael Peoples followed DeJesus and was just as good. He worked 2 innings without allowing a hit or a run. He walked 1 and struck out 2. Cody Penny then worked a perfect 1-2-3 top of the 9th inning to pick up his 2nd save of the year. He closed out the game by striking out the side.
The Scrappers trailed the Cyclones 2-1 going into the bottom of the 8th inning. The first two hitters were retired in order by Cyclones reliever David Wynn. The Joe Wendle delivered his 3rd hit of the game, a single, to put the tying run aboard. Sever followed, and was not interested in tying the game. He sent a 2-0 fastball over the leftfield fence and into the Brooklyn bullpen for his first professional homerun. It put the Scrappers up by the final margin, 3-2.
The Scrappers and Cyclones will play again on Sunday at 5:05. It will also be Base Brawl 3, with live professional wrestling following the game. Call the Scrappers box office at 330-505-0000 to get your tickets.
