Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

MARION, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums(31-37) came back from two separate deficits to take a lead but home runs in the eighth and ninth made a third comeback impossible as they fell to the Southern Illinois Miners(34-32), 8-7.

For the third straight game, the Beach Bums fell behind 2-0, tonight on a first inning two run homer by Chance Shepard. What was different in this game was that the Beach Bums responded. Alexis Rivera led off the second with a double to left then stole second. Connor Oliver grounded out to the right side, allowing Rivera to move to third. Kendall Patrick then drove him home with a double to deep left field, pulling Traverse City within one.

In the fourth, Luke Lowery led off with a walk then stole second on a botched pickoff attempt. Two batters later, Steve Lohr singled to center and Lowery came in to score to tie the game at two. Romeo Cortina hit a two run home run in the fifth then Kurt Wertz Jr. Drove in a run on a groundout for a 5-2 Southern Illinois advantage.

With two out in the seventh, the Beach Bums put together a big rally, eventually sending nine men to the plate. Isaac Benard and Will Kengor got it started with back-to-back opposite field singles. Luke Lowery followed and drove them both home with a double. Alexis Rivera then walked and Lohr reached on an infield hit to load the bases. Connor Oliver cleared the bases with a double to the left field gap, giving the Beach Bums a 7-5 lead.

Unfortunately for Traverse City, the lead didn't last long as Southern Illinois responded in the seventh with a two-run homer by Shepard, his second of the game, tying the game. In the eighth, Daniel Comstock took one over the left field wall to give the Miners the lead for good.

Kody Rock earned the win in relief, going one and a third innings. He allowed a run on three hits, improving to 1-0 on the season. Matt Williams suffered the loss, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk. He falls to 3-2. John Werner earned the save in the ninth, hitting the first batter but retiring the rest in order for his sixth of the season.

On Friday night, the Beach Bums return home to Wuerfel Park to begin a six-game home stand, starting with a three-game set against the Normal Cornbelters.
