Late-Game Own Goal Helps Orlando City SC Play to 1-1 Draw Against New York Red Bulls
March 30, 2024 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Orlando City SC News Release
ORLANDO, Fla. - Orlando City SC (1-3-2, 5 points) rallied late in the game and picked up a point against the New York Red Bulls (3-1-2, 11 points) on Saturday night at INTER&Co Stadium. An 89th-minute own goal by Red Bulls' defender Noah Eile allowed Orlando to come away with the draw, caused after Iván Angulo whipped a low cross in from the left side.
The Lions will have a weekend off before returning to play on Saturday, April 13 when they travel to Audi Field for a matchup with D.C. United.
Scoring Summary:
21' Lewis Morgan (Penalty Kick) - RBNY 1, ORL 0
The Red Bulls scored first after Lewis Morgan drew a penalty inside the Orlando City box. Morgan stepped up and took the ensuing penalty kick and snuck in a shot past goalkeeper Pedro Gallese to the lower-right corner of the net.
89' Noah Eile (Own Goal) - ORL 1, RBNY 1
Orlando City was able to mount an attack late in the game and found its equalizer. Iván Angulo received a pass deep behind the Red Bulls' defense and sent a cross into the box that deflected off defender Noah Elie's foot and found its way into the net.
Head Coach Oscar Pareja:
"I'd describe the game today as a great effort with a poor result. The poor result means we have to take the point, but with that performance, that effort, that energy, you may think that things should end differently. But it did not. We conceded a PK from nothing. Other than that dangerous play by New York in the second half, but I don't remember any other [Red Bull opportunities]. We have volume, we have sequences, we have energy, we have many things that make you win games. But if you don't have punch then it's not going to happen. So, we need to score goals if we want to win games."
Match Notes:
Orlando City scored its fourth goal of the season after the 75th minute, with three of the four coming at INTER&Co Stadium.
The Lions will have a two-week break from play before returning to league action on Saturday, April 13 at D.C. United.
Head Coach Oscar Pareja made three changes to his starting lineup from his side's last match against Austin FC, with Pedro Gallese, Duncan McGuire and Facundo Torres all returning to the Starting XI.
Next Match: The Lions will next travel to take on D.C. United on Saturday, April 13 at Audi Field. That match will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
