Late error opens the door for a 7-6 Calgary win

Calgary, AB - Returning to Foothills Stadium for the second game of a four-game series against the Calgary Vipers, the Victoria Seals were in search of a sixth-straight win against their Alberta rivals on Friday night. Giving Jeff Duda (3-3) the start, the Seals matched up against Reggie Rivard (4-1) in an all-Canadian pitching matchup.

Jumping out to an early lead in the top of the second inning, the Seals took a 1-0 advantage when Brian Rios cashed a lead-off single from Tim Rodriguez with a double to right field. Two batters later, Colin Moro used an RBI single to score Rios and put Victoria up by two.

Calgary answered in the bottom of the frame with Julio Ramirez and Kevin Price both singled, and later scored with a two-run base hit courtesy of Luis Taveras to tie the game at 2-2.

The Seals responded to re-take their lead in the top of the when Rios drove in another run with another double, scoring Terrence McClain after the left-fielder's earlier single. But back came the Vipers in the bottom of the inning, using a solo home run off the bat of Jorge Mejia to even the score at 3-3.

Calgary took their first lead of the night in the fourth frame when Drew Miller singled, before scoring on an RBI base hit from Caonabo Cosme to make it 4-3 Snakes. Victoria quickly bounced back to tie the game at in the fifth when Wilver Perez' lead-off double scored on a RBI from groundout from McClain.

The Seals took their third lead of the contest in the top of the sixth inning with a clutch two-out, pinch hit double from Isaac Hess to score both Colin Moro and Made Edgecombe, lifting the Victoria to a 6-4 advantage.

But once more the Vipers rallied to tie the game, using a double from Brent Metheny to set up a two-out blast off the bat of Kevin Price to even the score at 6-6 through seven complete innings of work.

Calgary then took advantage of a costly error to end the back-and-forth battle, scoring Cosme with two outs in the bottom of the eighth when an errant throw from Seals third basemen Brian Rios put the Vipers up 7-6. Unable to stage a ninth-inning rally, Victoria falls by just one run in game two, slipping to 2.5 games back of the first-place Vipers with nine games remaining.

Monte Mansfield recorded the win after retiring the Seals in order in the eighth, while Chris Bodishbaugh took the loss after allowing the late unearned run. A pair of hits from Kevin Price paved the way to the comeback for Calgary, while Brian Rios had two doubles but committed the untimely error in a losing effort for the Seals.
