Orange County Flyers News Release
FULLERTON, Calif. -- Tonight the Orange County Flyers host a doubleheader against the Tijuana Cimarrones in the team's final home games of the 2010 regular season. The Flyers are celebrating Fan Appreciation Day with tons of amazing giveaways and prizes for fans, including the opportunity for one fan to win a new Tacoma truck from Buena Park Power Toyota. Former National League All-Star Mark Prior is scheduled to pitch for the Flyers in relief for a second straight night during the twin bill.
The playoff-bound Flyers finish the regular season next week with a seven game series in Maui before beginning the best of five games South Division Series in Maui against Na Koa Ikaika. Maui won the South Division first half while Orange County has locked up at least the second-best overall record in the division for a playoff berth.
LAST TIME OUT: The Flyers kept up their winning ways in a 6-3 victory over Tijuana on Friday. One day after clinching a playoff spot, OC overcame an early deficit on a two-out, two-run homerun by Julian Benavidez.
The Flyers (25-7 2nd half, 47-30) came out of the gates swinging, the second batter of the bottom of the first inning, Tyler Keeble, tripled to right field. The following batter Jimmy Rohan, walked and on a failed pickoff attempt to first, Carlos Dominguez dropped the ball which allowed Keeble to score from third on the error, giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead over Tijuana (3-27 2nd half, 9-66).
The Cimarrones came back in the top of the third scoring two runs to take the lead on the Flyers. Chris Luick and Kenny Burris hit back-to-back doubles, Burris's cashed Luick and two batters later Michael Corolla hit a run scoring single as Burris came around to touch home as Tijuana took a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Orange County's offense finally bursted scoring three runs to take the lead back. Steve Boggs singled to lead off the fifth, and after two outs, Benavidez blasted a two-run homer (10). The Flyers added one more run when David Harris doubled, and Derek Perren hit a run scoring single down the right field line for a 4-2 lead.
In the next inning, the Flyers loaded the bases after a pitch hit Zac Cline, and Boggs and Keeble walked. Rohan hit a two-run double to score Cline and Boggs for a 6-2 lead for the Flyers. Jimmy Rohan now has 118 hits on the season, four shy of the Orange County franchise record and seven away from tying the GBL record of 125 hits in a season.
Cline (6-2) pitched another strong performance picking up his third win in as many starts, going seven innings giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and striking out five Cimarrones. Mark Prior pitched a scoreless top of the eighth striking out the side on only 10 pitches. Andre Simpson picked up the save (13) with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, striking out Ivan Villaescusa for the final out of the ballgame.
