Caps Collapse In Crucial Tucson Tilt

Edmonton Capitals News Release
Tucson, AZ - The Edmonton Capitals were two outs away from achieving a hugely important win on Friday night in Tucson against the Toros, but they couldn't quite seal the deal and ended up losing 4-3 in extra innings.
The Caps held a 3-2 advantage on the Toros heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, but closer Chad Blackwell gave up a walk and two singles to allow the tying run to score, as short stop Ryan Priddy got the heroic RBI for the home side. It was centre fielder Josh Womack's turn to be the hero in the bottom of the 10th, reaching on an error with two outs and two runners on to give the Toros the walk-off victory.
The loss was particularly heartbreaking for the Caps, since the Calgary Vipers beat the Victoria Seals 7-6 on Friday as well. Edmonton (18-18) is now five games back of first-place Calgary (23-13) with nine games to go in the second half of the Golden Baseball League season. Victoria is in second in the North at 20-15, while the Chico Outlaws are in third at 18-16.
Other than Blackwell's ninth-inning blown save and 10th-inning loss, the Caps had a strong night on the mound, as starter Chris Little scattered two runs on five hits over five innings. Mike Johnson was one of three relievers to bridge the gap to the ninth inning and recorded all five of his outs with strikeouts.
Another bright spot on the night for the Caps was short stop Enrique Cruz extending his hitting streak to 28 games with an RBI single in the third inning. The GBL record for consecutive games with a hit is 30. Left fielder Larry Bigbie and catcher Mike Rose each went 2-for-4 in the defeat.
The Caps and Toros tangle two more times this series on Saturday and Sunday, both at 7 p.m. Edmonton returns home on Tuesday to start what could be a do-or-die three-game series with the Seals, as they will likely have to win all three games to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats for 2011 are now available, and fans who purchase them before Sept. 2 will received a bat autographed by the entire team. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
