May 18, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
The Worcester Tornadoes hit two homeruns, and had the tying run at the plate in the ninth, but Jorge Vazquez held on to save a 6-4 Newark Bears victory on Friday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Daryle Ward hit a two-run homer in the eighth as part of a three-run rally just half an inning after Jerod Edmondson and the Tornadoes tied the game at three with a sacrifice fly. Edmondson hit a four-bagger just two innings prior, the first of the season for his team.
Matt Fitton notched the victory with two-thirds of an inning of work. He retired both batters he faced, including Edmondson, who sent J.B. Brown home with the tying run on a shallow sacrifice fly. The next batter, Jose Canseco, put a ball onto the warning track dead against the wind for the final out of the top of the eighth.
Nick Serino lost his first decision of the season, allowing three runs on three hits including the Ward blast in the eighth, but bounced back to strike each of the next two batters out swinging to end the frame.
In the top of the ninth, Johnny Welch hit a two-out homer to match his former Pittsfield Colonials and current Tornadoes teammate Edmondson in the dinger department. Brendon Kelliher singled, but Brown grounded out to end the game.
Alex Trezza hit an RBI triple in the fourth inning to plate Brandon Pinckney, who had reached when he was hit by a payoff pitch. The three players with at least one RBI (Edmondson, Trezza and Welch) all ended their respective nights 1-for-4.
Burt Reynolds had two doubles for the Bears and scored each time on the base paths after them, while Quentin Davis, Alex Bardeguez and Juan Martinez each crossed the plate once on the night. Davis had his second two-hit night in a row (after two triples last night).
Ryan Bicondoa started the game for Worcester, compiling three strikeouts, two double plays and two 1-2-3 innings during five frames of work. He walked no one, but allowed three runs on six hits.
Brian Parker had the same fate as his counterpart Bicondoa: a no-decision. Parker logged six innings, striking out six and giving up two runs on three hits.
Phil Negus started his independent baseball career with two perfect innings, striking out three Bears across the sixth and seventh innings.
The third game of the series is at 6:35pm on Saturday night, as Dan Sausville will make his first start in a Tornadoes jersey. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:20 with Tornadoes Pre-Game Live on USTREAM.tv.
