Last Minute Loss In Lethbridge For Oil Kings

Lethbridge, AB - This one is going to sting a little. The Edmonton Oil Kings are coming back home from their brief road trip to southern Alberta empty handed after a comeback fell just short in Lethbridge Wednesday night. Carter Ashton scored his second of the game with just 45 seconds to go in regulation time to give the Hurricanes a 3 - 2 win in the second meeting of the season between the two clubs. The win bumps the Hurricanes into 8th place in the WHL's Eastern Conference just one point ahead of the Oil Kings in the ultra tight race for the last playoff spot.
This was actually a tight contest from start to finish. Rookie Mark Pysyk opened the scoring for the Oil Kings midway through the first period in a good start for Edmonton. They had the 1 - 0 lead and were outshooting Lethbridge 9 - 7 through the first 20 minutes of play.
Ashton's first of the game tied it at one midway through the second period on the powerplay and it stayed that way until early in the third period.
Just over 2 and a half minutes into the final frame, the Hurricanes threw everything they had at Oil Kings goalie Torrie Jung. The 19 year old made the first stop on Garrett Taylor but the puck was just sitting there right behind him in the crease. Jung thought he had the puck covered and argued that the whistle should've gone, but Austin Fyten was able to find the loose puck and deposit it for his 4th goal of the season to give the Hurricanes their first lead of the game.
Edmonton's co-captain Jeff Lee tied it up with 5 and a half minutes to go in regulation. Robin Soudek made a nice pass over to Lee who buried a backhand past Juha Metsola to get the Oil Kings back on even terms and set up the dramatic finish.
Most thought the game would be headed to extra time but Ashton had different ideas. The Hurricanes busted into Edmonton's zone on a 2 on 2. Colton Sceviour set up Ashton for the game winner with less than a minute to go and Edmonton didn't have an answer with the goalie pulled for the extra attacker.
So the Oil Kings have picked up 2 wins and 2 losses in this busy stretch where they've played 4 games in 5 nights and their overall record slips to 13-16-1-3. They'll have a day to recover and get set for back to back games this weekend at Rexall Place starting with the Kamloops Blazers on Friday night. It's going to be a loud one. The first 2500 fans will receive a free Oil Kings megaphone courtesy of the Sutton Place Hotel. Game time is 7 o'clock.
