Las Vegas Wranglers Mid-Season Review
January 22, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Las Vegas Wranglers News Release
The Las Vegas Wranglers got off to a quick start in their inaugural season. Las Vegas claimed first place in the Pacific Division of the ECHL with a season-opening 5-3 win in Idaho. The Wranglers returned home to a crowd of 7,208 on opening night at the Orleans Arena, welcoming the fans with a 4-2 victory over the Bakersfield Condors. The victory started a string of 14 home games (13-0-1) without a defeat in regulation for the Wranglers. Las Vegas entered November with a 5-1-1 mark and sole possession of first place. Goaltender Marc Magliarditi, center Greg Day and winger Justin Kelly put the Wranglers on the ECHL map by helping the team take three of four league monthly awards in October. Magliarditi won the Sun National Bank Saver of the Month award. Greg Day took home the Sher-wood Player of the Month award, while linemate Justin Kelly won the C & T Hockey Products Plus Performer of the Month. Kelly also finished runner-up for the CCM ECHL rookie of the month award.
The Wranglers rounded up a record of 9-1-2 before heading out to the East Coast in mid-November. Las Vegas returned home from the East Coast to reel off six straight wins. The Wranglers headed into December 11-5-4 and in first place in the Pacific Division. Las Vegas finished December with a 7-3-1 mark for the month. The Wranglers enjoyed their best road game to date scoring a season-high six goals in a victory over the Fresno Falcons on December 14th. During the first intermission, Wranglers General Manager / Head Coach Glen Gulutzan was honored by the Falcons who retired his #21 jersey. The Wranglers returned home to make professional hockey history by hosting the first ever midnight hockey game. Las Vegas edged Bakersfield 3-2 in overtime to win the historic game. Rookies Dave Cousineau and Justin Kelly were both selected to represent the Wranglers at the 2004 Par-a-Dice ECHL All-Star game on January 21st. Cousineau recorded a goal and an assist, as the Western Conference fell 7-6 to the Eastern Conference.
Six different Wranglers enjoyed call-ups to the American Hockey League. Rookie goaltender Brent Krahn and defenseman Deryk Engelland have been recalled twice by the Calgary Flames to the Lowell Lock Monsters. Forwards Greg Day and Garrett Bembridge both enjoyed recalls to Lowell. Bembridge was recalled on November 14th and still has yet to return. Forward Eric Schneider was recalled to the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL for three games. All-Star defensman Dave Cousineau enjoyed a one-game recall to Toronto of the AHL.
By the time Las Vegas hit the all-star break over 95,000 fans had passed through the gates of the Orleans Arena to see the Wranglers play. In their first 20 home dates, the Wranglers placed seventh best in the ECHL for attendance at 4,767 per game.
There's No Place Like Home
The Las Vegas Wranglers wasted no time in making the Orleans Arena one of the toughest places for an opponent to win a game in the ECHL. Las Vegas started the season with a 14-game (13-0-1) unbeaten streak at the Orleans. The Wranglers opened with a 4-2 win over the Bakersfield Condors on October 21st and did not suffer loss in regulation until December 28th when the San Diego Gulls handed the Wranglers a 1-0 defeat. Las Vegas was the last team in the ECHL to lose in regulation at home this season. Only one other team in the ECHL (Wheeling) has more home wins than Las Vegas this season. The Wranglers are 16-3-1 at home this season, amassing 33 out of a possible 38 points at home for a winning percentage of .868.
Magnificent Magliarditi
Wranglers' goaltender Marc Magliarditi played 28 of the teams 39 games before the all-star break going 18-7-3. Magliarditi heads into the break tied for third among league netminders with 18 wins. His 2.34 goals against average places him sixth best in the ECHL. Magliarditi also ranks fourth best in the ECHL with 859 saves. The Niagara Falls, NY native is also tied for seventh best in the ECHL with 1692 minutes played in net. Magliarditi has two streaks of playing 10 consecutive games or more. Magliarditi has been best at home this year going 13-2-1 with a 2.17 goals against average and a save percentage of .933. The seven-year professional went unbeaten in his first 13 games (12-0-1) at the Orleans Arena from October 21st to January 9th.
Streaking with Skates On
The Las Vegas Wranglers have seen plenty of streaks this season. Winger Chris Kenady's current streak of 11 consecutive games with at least one point is the team's longest scoring streak of the season. In the last 11 games dating back to December 27th, Kenady has nine goals and ten assists for 19 points. The second longest streak of the season belongs to Justin Kelly who scored three goals and assisted on eight others over a nine-game span from October 17th to November 4th. From October 21st to November 18th goaltender Marc Magliarditi played 12 straight games going 8-2-2 over the span. The 1995 sixth round pick (#146 overall) of the Chicago Blackhawks also has played in 11 straight games from December 28th to date going 6-4-1. The Wranglers other goaltender, Brent Krahn, caught fire in late November winning five straight games from November 27th to December 27th. Besides an unbeaten streak of 14 games at the Orleans Arena, the Wranglers also reeled off winning streaks of five and eight games. The eight-game winning streak is tied for the league's longest of the season.
