
Checkers Begin Three-Game Homestand this Weekend

(Charlotte, NC - Thursday, January 22) - The 2004 ECHL All-Star game break is over. The Checkers (18-16-5 for 41 points) will now get back to regular season action looking to snap a three-game losing streak and a five-game winless streak (0-4-1) as they open up a three-game homestand this weekend at Cricket Arena. Charlotte will host the Greensboro Generals FrIday night and then the Greenville Grrrowl on Saturday night, with both games starting at 7:30 p.m. The Checkers will play six of their next seven games on home ice, while 21 of their final 33 regular-season games will be played at Cricket Arena.

FRIDAY'S PREVIEW: The Checkers host the Generals Friday looking to even the eight-game season series at 2-2, while Greensboro will bring a three-game winning streak into Cricket Arena. The last time the two teams met, Greensboro took a 5-2 win on Jan 8 at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Generals have an eight point lead over the Checkers in the Southern Division race with a record of 24-17-1 for 49 points, with Charlotte having three games in hand. Greensboro's Center Mark Turner leads Greensboro in scoring with 17g, 35a = 52 points. The Generals are coached by Rick Adduono.

SATURDAY'S PREVIEW: Charlotte will close out a brief, two-game week by hosting the Greeenville Grrrowl Saturday night. The Grrrowl will bring the the ECHL's worst record into Cricket Arena, starting Friday night's play at 6-29-3 for 15 points. After Charlotte won the first two games of the seven-game season series, the Grrrowl won the last meeting with an 8-5 victory at the Bi-Lo Center on November 29. Left wing Bob Cunningham leads the Grrrowl in scoring with 21g, 19a, = 40 pts. Greenville starts the weekend on a seven-game winless streak at 0-6-1. The Grrrowl is coached by former Charlotte coach, John Marks.
