Las Vegas Aces News Release
LOS ANGELES, CA - Las Vegas travels to the City of Angels, Thursday, in search of its third straight victory, and its fifth in six games. Tip at Staples Center is slated for 7:30 pm PT.
A win over the Sparks would improve the Aces' record to 7-4. The last time Las Vegas was three or more games over .500 in a season was 2012 when they finished the year with a 21-13 record.
2018 Rookie of the Year A'ja Wilson leads the Aces in scoring at 15.4 points per game. Three other members of the team- Kayla McBride (15.2 ppg), Liz Cambage (14.3) and Dearica Hamby (10.4) are also averaging in double figures.
Defensively, Las Vegas still leads the W in a number of key categories including Defensive Efficiency (91.3 points per 100 possessions), defensive field goal percentage (.377), defensive three-point field goal percentage (.285), and defensive rebound percentage (.799).
The Sparks enter tonight's game with a 4-6 record, and have lost four straight. Three of those losses are by 10 or more points. Five-time All-Star Candace Parker missed Los Angeles' first seven games of the season, and is still trying to find her groove in her three games back in the lineup. She is averaging 5.7 points and 6.7 rebounds on 17.9 percent shooting from the field.
Maria Vedeeva scored 24 points for the Sparks in a season-opening loss to the Aces, but she left the team immediately afterward to compete in FIBA's 2019 Eurobasket tournament which runs through July 7.
Nneka Ogwuimke paces the team in scoring averaging 14.0 points per game while Chelsea Gray isn't far behind at 13.9 points per game. Chiney Ogwumike is averaging 12.6 points per game, but the Sparks, as a team, are making just 39.9 percent of their shots from the field, which is the third lowest percentage in the league.
On the defensive end, Los Angeles is allowing opponents to connect on 38.1 percent of their three-pointers.
This is the second meeting between the Aces and Sparks this season. Las Vegas picked up an 83-70 win over Los Angeles in the season opener for both teams. Wilson posted a 21-point, 11-rebound double-double in the win, while Hamby added a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double of her own.
