Las Vegas Wranglers News Release
Las Vegas, NV â The Las Vegas Wranglers announced today the signing defenseman Regan Darby and right wing Cam McCaffrey for the 2004-05 season.
"Darby is a defenseman who played very against us last year when he was in Idaho," said Wranglers Head Coach / General Manager Glen Gulutzan. "He is a player who will punish guys in front of the net and make them pay the price in the corners. He's a physical player who should help our blueline here in Las Vegas."
Darby enters his fifth year of professional hockey after splitting time between the Idaho Steelheads and the AHL's Utah Grizzlies in the 2003-04 season. Darby played in 24 games for Utah with one assist and 53 penalty minutes. The 24-year old defenseman suited up in 23 games for the Kelly Cup Champion Steelheads. In Idaho, Darby picked up one goal and one assist to go along with 49 penalty minutes and a +3 rating. Darby brings a wealth of playoff success with him to Las Vegas. The defenseman played for the ECHL's 2004 Kelly Cup Champions and the 2003 Kelly Cup runner-ups (Columbia Inferno). Overall, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound defenseman has played 206 career games with four goals and seven assists for 11 points. The rugged Saskatchewan native has racked up 676 career penalty minutes.
Darby was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the fourth round (#90 Overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft after three junior seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL). Darby participated in Calgary's Prospect Camp and is now heading to Lowell (AHL) for the Lock Monsters training camp.
"Cam McCaffrey is a young and tough kid out of the WHL," said Glen Gulutzan. "He has some great potential and also has a great opportunity to play at the higher level. He should bring a lot of energy and hard work to the Wranglers."
McCaffrey turns pro after three seasons in the WHL, splitting time between the Kamloops Blazers and the Tri-City Americans. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound right wing had a breakout season last year after getting traded two games into the season from Kamloops to Tri-City. With Tri-City, the 21-year old posted career highs with 19 goals, ten assists, and 29 points. The rugged winger also added 140 penalty minutes in 66 games. In three WHL seasons, the Calgary, AB native scored 27 goals, 16 assists for 43 points while piling up 507 penalty minutes in 201 games. McCaffrey also participated in the Calgary prospects camp.
The Wranglers total roster of signed players for the 2004-05 season is now twelve. The Wranglers have goalie Marc Magliarditi, defensemen Jason McBain, Mike McBain, Troy Smith, and Jon Krall signed. Forwards Morten Ask, Jeff Attard, Doug Wright, Dan Tudin and Chris Stanley are under contract for the 2004-05 season.
