Larson's First Goal Provides Bright Spot in 6-2 Loss

Spokane, Wash. - Facing the division-rival Everett Silvertips for the first time this season, the Spokane Chiefs fell flat on Saturday, losing 6-2. Rookie forward Cordel Larson provided a bright spot, scoring his first career WHL goal in the third period.

After 10 minutes over back-and-forth, Everett's Connor Dewar broke the seal on the night's scoring, making it 1-0 at 12:36 of the first period with the first of three power play goals for the Silvertips. Within the next three and half minutes of play, the Silvertips added on two more scores and taken control of the game.

Everett's strong play continued into the second period as they added another pair of goals at 7:35 and 11:46, sending things into the second intermission with a 5-0 lead for the visitors.

Spokane finally got on the board at 1:13 of the third when Larson found the puck in a net front scrum on a power play and backhanded it past Silvertips' goaltender Dustin Wolf to earn his first career goal. Everett pushed the lead back to five when Gianni Fairbrother -- the fifth skater to score for Everett -- sealed it for good at 6:19 of the final frame. Carter Chorney added a shorthanded goal at 18:32 for Spokane, but it was too little too late.

Spokane goalies split time in net, with Bailey Brkin starting and playing 16:01, making four saves on seven shots faced. Dawson Weatherill replaced Brkin and ended the night with 13 saves on 16 shots faced in 43:59. Wolf turned aside 23 of 25 shots faced. Spokane finished 1-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-7 on the penalty kill.

The Chiefs are back in action Sunday evening as they take on the Portland Winterhawks at home for the second time this season. Mike Boyle will have the radio call on 1510 KGA, beginning with pre-game at 4:30 p.m. and puck drop at 5 p.m.
