Larson Player of the Week, Dorey added
December 10, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Dean Larson has been named WCHL Player of the Week and selected as one of the top performers of the week in minor league hockey by SportsTicker, a real-time sports news service from ESPN.
Larson had four goals and three assists last week, including a hat trick in Friday's 6-5 victory over Bakersfield, as Anchorage rallied after losing twice at home to Long Beach with a three-game sweep of the Condors. At age 33, he leads the WCHL in scoring with 28 points on 12 goals (tied for second in the WCHL) and 16 assists (tiedâfourth). No active player in the league is within 300 points of Larson's 728.
SportsTicker bills itself as the world's leading instant sports news and information service. Among the other players honored this week are former New York Islanders first round choice Rick DiPietro, who extended his unbeaten streak to 14 games with a shutout for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League.
Anchorage also made two roster moves Tuesday, placing defenseman Dave Csumrik on the 14-day injured reserve list retroactive to December 6, and activating 5-11, 175 pound center Wes Dorey, who will join the team in time for this weekend's games. Dorey had five goals and four assists in 19 games for Idaho this year before being waived last week as a salary cap casualty. He scored 17 goals and assisted on 28 others for the Steelheads during his rookie season in 2001-02 and was a unanimous pick for the all-WCHL rookie team.
After playing junior hockey for the Weyburn Red Wings in Saskatchewan (and winning the SJHL title after a 74-goal, 106-assist season), Dorey spent four years at the University of North Dakota. He won a national championship with the Fighting Sioux in 2000 and scored with 37 seconds remaining a year later to force overtime in the NCAA championship game. North Dakota's luck ran out in OT as the Sioux lost to Boston College in a rematch after beating the Eagles the year before. The 26-year-old Dorey finished his college career with 99 points (65 in his last two years) on 47 goals and 52 assists in 140 games.
The Aces (7-16-1 overall) return to action Friday night in San Diego against the struggling Gulls (9-10-1 after a 2-0 win vs. Idaho last night) at 6:00 p.m. AST before heading north to Bakersfield for a Saturday night rematch with the Condors (13-6-2) at 6:00 p.m. AST. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
