Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
MADISON, WI-The Madison Capitols scored four times in the third period to nearly spoil the evening for the Dubuque Fighting Saints, but it took all of 12 seconds in overtime for Dubuque to earn the victory. Sasha Larocuqe's pass banked off a defender's skate only 12 seconds in the extra session to give Dubuque a 6-5 win over the Capitols Friday night at the Alliant Energy Center. Dubuque held a 4-1 lead early in the third period before the Capitols scored four straight goals to briefly take a 5-4 lead. Willie Knierim scored late to send the game for overtime for Dubuque where Larocque provided the heroics.
Dubuque struck first on the road Friday. Evan Smith opened the scoring at the 15:27 mark of the opening period. After Smith missed a chance in alone in front, he was the recipient of a pass from Sasha Larocque on the left wing. He waited for goaltender Garrett Metcalf to drop to the ice and scored on a wrist shot short side. The tally was his third of the season and made it 1-0.
The Capitols ran into penalty trouble in the second period and Dubuque took advantage by adding to its lead. Gordie Green scored on the power play at the 3:21 mark of the middle frame. On the man advantage, a wrist shot from the blue line bounced off a stick and deflected off the pad of Metcalf. Green sat alone on the left side of the crease and backhanded a shot past the goaltender to make it 2-0.
Less than a minute later, the Fighting Saints scored again. Shane Kavanagh missed the net on a 2-on-1 rush but recollected the puck courtesy of a Larocque pass. Kavanagh looked to the slot where Ryan Stevens was open. He dished a pass to Stevens who beat Metcalf glove side. The goal was Stevens' second of year and ended Metcalf's night. Darren Smith replaced the goaltender in net, and he was strong in relief, stopping 14 more Dubuque shots in the second period.
The Capitols finally solved Dubuque netminder Gavin Nieto late in the second period on the powerplay goal from Tyler Nanne. Off a faceoff win, Nanne fired a wrist shot from the right point that beat Nieto over the catching glove to make it 3-1 Dubuque at the 17:13 mark.
Seamus Malone scored on a 5-on-3 powerplay to make it 4-1 Dubuque 4:34 into the third period. After that it was all Madison.
Haralds Egle made it 4-2 at 7:11. Guillaume Leclerc made it a one-goal game with a great wrist shot over Nieto's glove at 9:15. Charlie Gerard scooped home a rebound at 16:22 to tie the game before Jarod Zirbel scored his first goal of the season on a wraparound to give the Capitols the lead at 17:05.
Dubuque was able to quickly tie the game back up on a scramble in front of Smith that saw Knierim poke a shot past the goaltender at 17:29 to make it 5-5.
In overtime, Larocque collected his third point of the night, rushing the puck in down the right wing and firing a backhand pass to the net. It hit a defender's skate and deflected in to give the Fighting Saints the win.
