Laredo Wins Seventh Straight

Laredo Bucks News Release


LAREDO, Texas - The defending CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks dominated early, and then held on for a 5-3 win over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at the LEC in front of 5,205 fans. Forward Jeff Bes scored a pair of goals as the Bucks won their seventh straight game. Overall Laredo improved their Southern Conference best record to 35-13-5 with 75 points, and they lead Corpus Christi by eleven points with one game in hand in the Southeast Division race. The Bucks now head on the road for three games. Laredo returns home on Friday, March 9th, against Colorado. The first 2,000 fans get a Bucks mouse pad courtesy of Doctors Hospital. If Laredo sells out the game they will donate $10,000 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, so pack the house for JDRF. The Bucks are offering season tickets starting at less than $79. Laredo absolutely dominated the first period of play. Bes got things going by stuffing in a rebound at 5:07 for his 23rd of the season on a power play. At 8:30 on another power play chance defenseman Steve Weidlich hammered home a one-timer for his sixth of the season to make it 2-0. The Bucks were just getting warmed up as forward Donnie Margettie centered to forward Leo Thomas who snapped home a wrister from the bottom of the right circle 22 seconds later for his 20th of the season. Late in the period the Bucks continued to hammer away. Bes scored again, this time as a centering pass deflected off a Killer Bees defenseman and into the net for another power play goal at 17:54. Just 34 seconds later forward Igor Pohanka cut down the left wing and snapped a shot from the wall near the bottom of the circle that snuck thru five-hole to make it 5-0. It was the fifth of the year for Pohanka and his fourth straight game with a goal. Laredo tied a franchise record with five goals in the period as they out shot Rio Grande Valley 22-2.

The Killer Bees turned the tables in the second period. Forward Matt Reynolds scored just 11 seconds in, and then forward Dennis Maxwell blasted home a shot at 1:47 to make it a 5-2 game.

Rio Grande Valley got closer in third period as defenseman Matt Medley blasted a slap shot from the top of the right circle at 2:17 to make it 5-3. The Bucks then hung on down the stretch to finish off the win. FINAL SCORE Laredo 5, Rio Grande Valley 3.

Eric Marvin stopped 26 of 29 shots and got the win to improve to 17-5-4. Jeremy Symington started and played the first period, allowing five goals on 22 shots and getting the loss to fall to 15-13-4. Jeff Van Nynatten stopped all 17 shots he saw in 38 plus minutes of relief, but did not factor in the decision. The Bucks were 3-4 on the power play, while Rio Grande Valley went 0-4. Laredo out shot the Killer Bees 39-29.
