Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. - Luis Lara hit a solo home run in the sixth, but that homer accounted for the only run scored in a 3-1 Carolina Mudcats loss to the Lynchburg Hillcats in Sunday's series finale at Five County Stadium in Zebulon.
Lynchburg (2-1, 33-35) starter Adam Tulloch earned the victory while allowing just one run over six quality innings pitched. Tulloch (W, 3-2) also walked one and struck out five while scattering four hits in the victory.
Reliever Zach Jacobs entered in the seventh and took it the rest of the way while earning a three-inning save. Jacobs (S, 3) gave up a two-out single Lara and a double to Jheremy Vargas in the eighth, but stranded both runners while allowing just two hits over three scoreless to get the save.
The Mudcats (1-2, 34-32) used six different pitchers in the game with starter Logan Henderson pitching the first before giving way to relievers Quinton Low, Jeferson Figueroa, Will Childers, Jeison Pena and Shane Smith as each pitcher needed work before Carolina's upcoming off-days.
Henderson worked a scoreless first, but Low (L, 0-3) allowed three runs across the second and third while taking the loss. Meanwhile, Figueroa allowed an inherited runner to score in the third, but turned in a scoreless outing much like Childers, Pena and Smith. Carolina's six pitchers combined to hold the Hillcats to just 2-for-18 with runners in scoring position and combined to strand 14 base runners in the loss.
Low took the loss after allowing all three Lynchburg runs over and inning and 1/3 in relief of Henderson. He began his appearance with back-to-back walks (on eight pitches) to start the second before giving up a two-run single to Zac Fascia. He also walked Maick Collado in the third before leaving the game. Collado went on to score moments later on a Jose Devers double.
Carolina's lone run came in the sixth when Lara connected on a solo home run off Tulloch. The home run was his second of the season and his first at Five County Stadium. It also came on the first pitch of the sixth and was his second against a left-handed pitcher this season.
